This week in the kitchen

Monday/26-Aug-19: Dinner was Steak au Poivre (How2Eat, p153). My steaks were too thin, but it was still quite good. Some long-grain brown rice for a side. And some steamed broccoli with a sauce of sautéed garlic and shiitakes. Some St Felicien for after. Then some chocolate squares.

Tuesday/27-Aug-19: Dinner out with Patrice&Wim tonight. Nothing happened in the kitchen.

Wednesday/28-Aug-19: Off for a haircut today. Simple dinner of little Drôme raviolis with cilantro pesto from the freezer, followed by a salad with lots of home-grown tomatoes, followed by the last of the St Felicien, followed by some chocolate-covered madeleines.

Yogurt on overnight.

Thursday/29-Aug-19: Shopping today.

Dinner was Fish in a Boat, Asian Style (Desperation, p304), which was okay but nothing special. And some basmati rice sprinkled with a Japanese flavor topping that James sent us; we both thought this was unpleasantly sweet. And some Garlicky Green Beans (Desperation, p18), which were pretty good. Some store-bought cheesecake for dessert. (Too bad, we're going to have to finish this tomorrow.)

Friday/30-Aug-19: Dinner was Boudin Noir aux Pommes (web). This was pretty good stuff. Served with Spaetlze (from MW@Home). Then a big salad with lots of tomatoes from the potager. Then the rest of the store-bought cheesecake.

Yogurt on overnight.

Saturday/31-Aug-19: Dinner out this evening. Nothing happened in the kitchen.

Sunday/1-Sep-19: Deseeded, cooked, and buzzed a bunch of tomatoes this afternoon. Froze up 3 1-cup jars.

Dinner was Revoltillo—Scrambled Eggs with Tomatoes and Peas (TLCarib, p71). This was okay, but maybe not the best of these scrambled egg dishes. Then a salad. Then some chaource. Then some chocolate-covered corn flakes. We're full.

This week in the kitchen

Monday/15-Apr-19: We ate dinner while listening to the horrendous news as Notre Dame burned in Paris. Heart-breaking.

For dinner, Ed grilled Spatchcock Piri-Piri Chicken (web) with bricks. It was good, but the chili wasn't noticeable. For a side there was Caramelized Spicy Green Beans (web) and Clothilde Dusoulier's Perfect Roasted Potatoes. Both these were good. I skipped a beat and made some rice as a go-with, but I needed to make rice for tomorrow's meal, so it won't go to waste. Mini ice cream bars for after.

Yogurt on overnight.

Tuesday/16-Apr-19: For dinner, I sort of made a 2/3 recipe of Chipotle Meatballs (web) with 350g of ground meat, but all the sauce. We ate all the meatballs and I've got some of the sauce to freeze. Served over linguine, followed by a bit salad. And chocolate easter bunny for dessert.

Wednesday/17-Apr-19: Dinner was Cajun Salmon Burgers (web), pretty yummy these were, and easy. Served with guacamole and sautéed veg (onion, garlic, broccoli, zuke) from the fridge. We had a pair of madeleines as we walked down to the potager and some chocolate easter bunny later.

Thursday/18-Apr-19: Shopping day.

Dinner was Fish in Ajillo Sauce (web), with lieu noir. Served with polenta (rather than rice) and some steamed broccoli that Corinne gave me this morning with olive oil, butter, and lemon juice. Good it all was. Before dinner we both ate a cornuelle that I got at the boulangerie. Nothing more needed.

Yogurt on overnight

Friday/19-Apr-19: Dinner was boudin noir (Bearnaise, whatever that means in this case). Planned it to use up the last of the Banana-Ginger Chutney, only to find that the chutney was moldy. Before it's time. Scrounged some other chutneys from the fridge. With some smashed potatoes and leeks. Followed by salad. Then some strawberries and ice cream.

Saturday/20-Apr-19: Dinner was a half dose of Pappardelle with Roasted Butternut Squash (web; cookbooker). This was easy and quite tasty. I meant to serve it with a salad, but forgot to buy another sack. But, it turns out that there was plenty of arugula in the dish itself. Ha, turns out I've made this before, using sorrel instead of arugula. Nevermind, it's good. Strawberries and ice cream again for dessert.

Sunday/21-Apr-19: Dinner was a half dose of Lamb Shanks Adobo (Sunset, p426; cookbooker). This was extremely good. Served with Los Tios Mexican Rice (TexMex, p163; cookbooker). I was thinking of making some plain rice with a bit of ground cumin, but bumped into this recipe, which was quite good and not too hard at all. And there was Ensalada de Ejotes—Sperziebonensalade met Feta (from a Mexican cooking course I took in Amstelveen). This was easy and yummy.

I used some mangoes that have been hanging around for a while to make Postre de Mango (from the same Mexicen cooking course). This was crushed cookies to make the bottom, topped with mangos puréed with condensed milk and fromage blanc. Quite sweet from the condensed milk, but not bad.

This week in the kitchen

Monday/5-Nov-18: No more mice caught today.

It occurred to me today that I've taken to choosing my monthly book wrong. Instead of choosing one that I've not used much and might be a candidate for recycling, I've frequently chosen ones that either I've used or I've been wanting to use. Will try to do better with this.  It is interesting making a of use of a single book in a month.

Thought I had the meal plan for the next week fairly complete when I sat down today. After a few finishing touches, I discovered that I had three cow-centered meals planned over four days. Odd since we don't eat that much cow. Have that all jiggled now, so should be quick list-making tomorrow.

Tonight we had the other two Jamaican Burgers, along with the Banana-Ginger Chutney (good stuff, that). Served with Jamaican Jerk Grilled Eggplant (web), without the optional sauce. Used the rest of the brown rice to make a sort of stir-fried rice with peas and tossed in the rest of the jerk sauce. Turned out pretty good. Some mini ice cream bars for dessert.

Yogurt on overnight.

Tuesday/6-Nov-18: No mice caught today.

Our meal was Tandoori Chicken Thighs (web; CL/may12), a half recipe. Easy and good, cooked under the broiler. Then there was Yellow Rice with Potato and Cumin (SpiceKitch, p64), good stuff. I used one third of the rice with all of the spices. I used up the rest of the snijbonen to make South Indian-Style Green Beans (MJ@Home, p147), also good. Have enjoyed both of these before. At a boulanger in the afternoon, I bought one piece of flan; we split that for dessert.

Wednesday/7-Nov-18: No mice caught today. We know you're there!

Shopping late. Dinner was Tilapia Poached in a Chipotle Mushroom Broth (MC; web), but with lieu noir, rather than tilapia (which isn't much sold here). Lots of yummy broth left. Served with bucatini, which was the wrong pasta, and some clean-out-the-fridge steamed veggies, a bit of broccoli, a carrot, and one snijbonen. Some store-bought riz au lait avec vanile for dessert.

My sourdough starter is alive! Two days ago it grew to the top of the jar, then apparently "burped" and went down in volume. This has happened a couple of times now, though not so dramatic at the first time. Hope to start a bread within the next days.

Thursday/8-Nov-18: Dinner was Beef with Spinach—Saag Gosht (Q&E, p36). I made a whole recipe and the two of us ate it all; we were stuffed but we ate it all. (New pressure cooker is pretty fiddly. Had trouble getting it sealed right so that it would work properly.) Over plain basmati rice. Served with a half recipe of Tomato, Onion and Green Coriander Relish—Cachumber (MJ1, p172). For dessert, there was Caramelized Cardamom Apples with Pistachio Cream‐Sev Ka Murabba (Q&E, p122), which was good. Have made all of these before.

Yogurt on overnight.

Started on a loaf of sourdough bread by making the sponge this evening. Using my starter from Fancy, but the bread from Chocolate&Zucchini. I love that she says to "place the bowl [with the sponge] next to the chef starter so they can tell knock-knock jokes to one another all night." We'll see how this goes. Tomorrow the bread.

Friday/9-Nov-18: Caught another mouse today. Hoping this is the last one. Please.

Finished my bread today, but it's still cooling so it might be tomorrow before we can try it. Had to add more flour, and I see that the current version on the web has some gluten added, so I added that too. Looks beautiful. We'll see.

Dinner was boudin noir, with the Banana-Ginger Chutney, which was a good combination. Served with tagliatelle, followed by a big salad.

Saturday/10-Nov-18: No trapped mouse today.

It was supposed to fresh pasta today, but I was too tired. Also couldn't face clearing off the counter, where mouse-threatened packages are sitting till we're sure we've removed all the mice.

Dinner was a half recipe of Simple Veal Pasta Sauce—Piccolo Ragù de Vitello (MarCuc, p172), served over malfalda. No ground veal, so I chopped up a scallop and it worked fine. Then a big salad. Then a  bit of Petit Basque cheese. We've eaten well.

Sunday/11-Nov-18: No trapped mouse today.

Made some Everyday Scones (Fancy, p173; cookbooker) this morning. These were easy and pretty good. The recipe advertises that it makes nine scones; I ended up with eleven. My cutter was slightly bigger than 2"; we thought they were a bit small. But good, especially with a dab of jam.

Fed my Fancy sourdough starter, with sugar as instructed. Not sure I've seen this before. If it doesn't bubble up and burp over this time.

Yogurt on overnight.

This week in the kitchen

Monday/9-Apr-18: This was a day for using up leftovers. I defrosted some chipolatas, and we had them with leftover cauliflower salad, hominy, roast potatoes, and sweet potatoes. A nice mix. Finished the St Felicien for afters.

Yogurt on overnight.

Tuesday/10-Apr-18: Another day of using up leftovers. Stir-fried rice. Had MW@Home on the counter, but didn't really use it. Sloshed together stuff for a sauce. Cooked some eggs. Onion, garlic, green bell pepper strips, peas. Leftover rice from last Friday. Good it was.

Wednesday/11-Apr-18: Shopping today.

Our meal was a half recipe of Stir-Fried Beef with Five Peppercorns (HomTrav, p126), using the last faux filet I defrosted for Sunday. This was good stuff, easy to make and tasty. I didn't much like the suggested noodles as accompaniment; rice would have been better. As a side, there was Broccoli in Fragrant Wine Sauce (HotWok, p156). This was nice, as usual. For dessert, I finished my chocolate Easter bunny. Ed finished his in one big session many days ago.

Thursday/12-Apr-18: Cath came to eat today before we went off to see a little art exhibit. We started with a mâche and beet salad, as in BEFCC, but with the dressing from Pomiane's beet salad. For a main with had Whitefish en Papillote (BestPC, p60), with lieu noir; brown rice on the side. When we got back we had coffee, tea, and Cath's apple&blackberry crumble.

Yogurt on overnight.

Friday/13-Apr-18: Our meal was Spanish Supper: Chicken Morcilla and Sherry (BirdHand, p10). I used only three thighs, since that was in a packet, and but boudin noir made it extra. I tossed in two artichoke hearts left from yesterday. Served this with polenta to soak up the juices. For a starter we had beets and mâche with the rest of Pomiane's dressing. Tastily stuffed we were.

Saturday/14-Apr-18: Our meal was Spinazie Omelet met Zalm en Cottage Cheese (web). More or less. The picture here looks more like a pancake than an omelet, while mine looked more like scrambled eggs. Nevermind, it all tastes very good together. Next time, think I would make two single omelets, fold the thinly sliced spinach (or arugula) into the omelet, then top with cheese (I used pyramid goat cheese), pine nuts, salmon, and chives. Followed by Tomato and Cucumber Salad (BEFCC, p24), which was a nice dish.

Sunday/15-Apr-18: Our meal today was a halfish recipe of Nigel Slater's Aubergine Ragu with Cream and Parmesan Lentils (web). I used a whole eggplant, which was fine for the two us; everthing else was close to half. More shrooms wouldn't hurt. Thought Slater's lentil-cooking time was a bit short, but maybe mine were old? Good and filling, your basic brown meal.

Yogurt on overnight.

This week in the kitchen

Monday/3-Oct-16: Put up the latest batch of tomato purée. Now a brief pause before picking more.

Hamburger time tonight. Ed was supposed to barbecue this evening, but he hurt his back falling off a ladder and didn't feel like it, so I grilled them on the stove. Very lean ground beef mixed with a shot of soy sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, and a dash of cayenne. Pretty good, although I cooked them a bit long. Served with the leftover lentil salad, still good. Also grilled a zucchini cut in thick slices and sprinkled with a Moroccan spice mix, with a sauce of crème fraîche and minced garlic. Mini magnums for after.

Tuesday/4-Oct-16: Dinner was Fattoush—Levantine Bread Salad (PatSalads, p72). Picked two tomatoes from the potager to use. Instead of pita breads, I used some lavash. I rather like that and have bought it twice now. I see I forgot to add the cucumber, but it was still a yummy salad. Some bit of cooked meat (chicken?) might be nice too, or maybe feta.

For dessert, there was Apple Crisp (BeatThis, p13; cookbooker). Having had a look through this book, I'm going to put it in the recycle box. Too many recipes using canned soup, etc. But I saw this and gave it a try. I made it with frozen raspberries and grannies, half and half. Very good, with a splash of cream. Have put the recipe in my HandyBook, since a quick and easy sort of dessert is always useful.

Wednesday/5-Oct-16: Shopping today. The enlargement mess and noise continues to be very unpleasant.

I bought a bit of blue cheese today (St Agur) just for a lark, and, as we returned home, I noticed lots of ripe figs on our neighbor's tree. I went and picked four for us. For a starter, I halved these lengthwise, crumbled a bit of blue cheese and dribbled a bit of honey onto each, popped them in the oven for a few minutes, then served topped with chopped walnuts. Yum. Even Ed liked them.

Our main was salmon (cookbooker) from my latest book for Cookbook Countdown. Served with some trio rice. Followed by a simple salad. We didn't feel a need for dessert (but we did have some square of chocolate later). We might finish the apple-raspberry crisp for breakfast tomorrow.

My attempts at making a yummy fig jam haven't been very successful. We're currently eating a really good fig-walnut jam that I picked up at a market somewhere. I'm tempted to pick a basketful and try again. We might have some of last year's walnuts still in the freezer. (It looks like this year will be a pretty poor crop unfortunately.)

Yogurt on overnight.

Thursday/6-Oct-16: Ed has asked for more beefy things, so tonight there was boudin noir again. Not really beefy, but high in protein for his hemoglobin.

During the day I made up some Carrot and Ginger Quickie Pickle (MC; Scraps, p82; web).

We had Black Pudding in Pastry with Mustard Sauce (Diaries2, p146), kind of sausage rolls, but with black puddings. The recipe asks morcilla, which I have seen at Leclerc, but not this week, so I got regular boudin noir, locally made. I used a package of four squares of pâte feuilleté, rolling two square out to a rectangle that enclosed the boudins on a bed of onions. Pretty good, but doesn't need to be made again. Served with some steamed broccoli, and some apple chunks that I sautéed in the onion pan. Also made some Radish and Sour Cream Salad (TLMidEast, p87), but we were too full to eat it.

Friday/7-Oct-16: Picked some more tomatoes today, just enough for dinner and a few extra. Finally made Tomato Sauce with Onion and Butter (ClassItal, p152). Had an idea to serve it with fresh pasta, but didn't have time in the end, and she doesn't recommend it, except for potato gnocchi, which I definitely wouldn't make. I neglected to peel the tomatoes, which was a shame, so I buzzed them a bit (not quite enough) with my stick blender. Looks chef-boyardee-ish, but tastes much better. Froze half for later use.

Saturday/8-Oct-16: Had our main meal early today so we can go out this evening. We had West Indies Salmon Cakes (MC; web). Yummy and three more frozen for another meal. Served with turmeric rice, loosely based on something from the web, the Carrot and Ginger Quickie Pickle that I made earlier in the week, and Pan-Grilled Zucchini (MJ@Home, p173). All yummy. Had some mini magnums for dessert.

Sunday/9-Oct-16: Home late last night, and up late this morning. We went to a concert in the afternoon. I had planned to cook dinner, but really didn't feel like it. So we went out for pizza instead.

Yogurt on overnight.

This week in the kitchen

Monday/18-Apr-16: Cleaning today and didn't feel like cooking. Defrost a pasta sauce (winter squash and beans) and served it over mushroom pasta. And a big salad. We were well-fed. We ate outside, even though we needed a jacket. The sun was shining and there was no wind where we sat. We have the idea we've eaten out earlier in the year, but I didn't note it, so this will do.

Yogurt on overnight.

Tuesday/19-Apr-16: I recently finished reading Diane Henry's A Change of Appetite, which I found via the I Heart Cooking Clubs group. I wasn't much impressed as I read it, there seemed to be too many of difficult to find ingredients and a bit to righteous in tone. I was surprised, though, how many recipes I had marked to try. Guess I'll have to keep it around for a bit.

Dinner was Red Lentil and Cauliflower Tomato Pulao (web), which was remarkably good (even though the gas ran out while the rice and lentils were first cooking. I used up the frozen cauliflower I bought, hoping it would be a good substitute for the real thing (it's hard to two people to finish a whole cauliflower, especially since Ed isn't overly fond of it), but I won't buy any more. We split an espresso magnum for dessert.

Wednesday/20-Apr-16: Dinner out after picking Bill up at the station. Nothing happened in the kitchen today except cleaning.

Thursday/21-Apr-16: Ed went after choir practice to buy tuna on sale at Intermarché, but there was none. So we had Boudins Noirs aux Oignons (web). The onions tasted quite bitter even after cooking long and slow, so I grated in a couple of apples at the last minute. Wasn't bad (Ed liked it). Unfortunately Bill doesn't really care for boudins noir. For a starter, I used up our carrots to make Grated Carrots with Vinaigrette (Secrets, p67). For dessert we had store-bought toetjes, some raspberry tarts.

Yogurt on overnight

Friday/22-Apr-16: Shopping today, a bit belated. Impulse bought some smoked salmon on sale, leading to tonight's starter.

Which, more or less, was Smoked Salmon Salad with Dill (BEFCC, p35). I didn't have the fennel, but it was good without it. For the main there was Duck with Peppercorns—Magret de Canard aux Grains de Poivre (BEFCC, p142). Good stuff.Served with smashed potatoes and peas with shallots. Cheese for after. We had a little bûche of goat cheese, and today I bought a small chees collection with tomme de Savoie, brie de Meaux, and fourme d'Ambert. All good. Unfortunately.

Saturday/23-Apr-16: Out all day today at the Phoenix book sale. Dinner out. Nothing happened ing the kitchen.

Sunday/24-Apr-16: We had our main meal early so we could go to an early evening concert. We had Quiche à l'Agneau, aux Épinards et à la Feta (web, VPG), using most of the cooked lamb from the freezer.  Cook stuff. The lamb and spinach went together exceptionally well. Then a salad. Then we left for the concert. Later we had some fruit and cheese.

This week in the kitchen

Monday/21-Mar-16: Jiggled the plan. Dinner turned out to be Cornmeal and Spice-Crusted Scallops (CLmag; MC) which I seem to have last made in 2009. Substituted cumin for the coriander. Served with garlic mashed potatoes made with a bit of soft goat cheese instead of butter, and some steamed broccoli. Made a yummy sauce of crème fraîche with a chipotle in adobo, garlic clove, lime juice, and salt, which went well over everything.

Tuesday/22-Mar-16: Dinner was Slow Roasted Rosemary Leg of Goat (web) with a 1.4kg leg. The rub was yummy. The advice to put in potatoes for the last hour didn't work at all; potatoes take longer than an hour at such a low temperature. In fact, even the carrots weren't done-done after about four hours. (In the next days, I'll boil up and purée the sauce, carrots, and potatoes that we didn't eat, along with the remains of a jar of beef stock. All making a sort of potage like they serve here frequently as a first course. Into the freezer with it all.) The two of us ate all the meat, and we're quite full of that. Tasty though. Goat is a a nice meat.

Wednesday/23-Mar-16: Shopping today.

Dinner was, more or less, Restigouche Salmon (TLNewEng, p35). I didn't use salmon steaks, but one dos de saumon for the two of us. Didn't use the extra butter at the end for basting. The fish already seemed fat enough from the vegetable oil (grapeseed) in the marinade. And the cooking times were way off. I broiled 3-ish minutes on the first side and 2-ish on the second side, about half of what was asked. Served with steam-sautéed potatoes. Then a salad. Then some little puddings from the store.

Yogurt on overnight.

Thursday/24-Mar-16: Working on Ed's hemoglobin again, we had Boudin Noir and Sautéed Apples (web). This was thick slices of a large diameter boudin, cut at the shop. It seems not as strong tasting as others maybe (or maybe we're getting used to the taste) and maybe had a bit of spiciness, since we both felt a tingle and I didn't even pepper this. Quite good. Served with trio rice and broccoli with onions and oven-dried tomatoes. Ed thought the boudin tower needed a photo. (Yes, same plates as last night.)

Friday/25-Mar-16: Replan for tonight's dinner since I didn't have the time or oomph to do what I'd planned. Defrosted some duck scallops, floured and seasoned, then sautéed. Made some Port Wine Pan Sauce with Dried Cranberries (HowTo, p161) as a topper. Didn't have any seedless raspberry jam or red currant jelly to make this, so used a bit of confit de airelles, a kind of cranberry jam sort of thing. This turned out good. Served with trio rice and asparagus.

Saturday/26-Mar-16-Sunday/27-Mar-16: We were off at the Bach à Paques festival in St Maixent l'Ecole. Nothing happened in the kitchen.

This week in the kitchen

Monday/29-Feb-16: Travel day.

Tuesday/1-Mar-16: Home at last. Ed made dinner, broccoli and a salad.

Wednesday/2-Mar-16: Shopping today.

Dinner was a half recipe of Halibut with Lentils and Mustard Sauce (web; cookbooker); almost a good recipe. The lentil with sweet potato was a bit bland. I cooked the fish under the broiler rather than sautéing it. The sauce was really iffy, way too sharp. I have an idea there there is Dijon mustard and there is Dijon mustard. What I have is too much to do in a 1:1 proportion with wine. On the other hand, it did liven up the lentils. (The rest will turn up as a salad dressing in the next days.) Followed by a salad. Since they haven't been having smaller sacks of lettuces, I got a bigger one, and we'll have the rest tomorrow.

Yogurt on overnight.

Thursday/3-Mar-16: Dinner for Ed's hemoglobin. I made a half dose of Spaghetti Corkese (web) with boudin noir in the sauce. Not the prettiest pasta dish ever, but wasn't bad to eat. Used 2 cups of (seedless) tomato sauce from the freezer rather than a can of tomatoes. Then a salad using the rest of last night's fish sauce with some oil added. Some defrosted raspberries with a bit of cream and crème de framboises for after.

Friday/4-Mar-16: Dinner was, sort of, a recipe from Nigella, Slow Roasted Garlic and Lemon Chicken (web). I spatchcocked my chickie, rather than cutting it in bits. But a nice way to cook it, covered and slow roasted for two hours, then open-cooked at a high temp for another 45min, giving a nice crispy skin. (I'm not a big skin person, but this was good.) Served with Clotilde Dusoulier's Perfect Roasted Potatoes (web) and some steamed broccoli with garlic and red pepper flakes.

Saturday/5-Mar-16: Dinner was Mushroom Polenta Pizza (web, also web). The recipe is supposed to serve four—maybe for lunch or as a starter. As the main, it served two, with a salad. Not really very pizza-ish, since the polenta base stayed pretty soft. I didn't have any "wild" mushroom, so soaked some dried cêpes to add to the rest, then used the soaking liquid as part of the veg broth for the polenta. The cheese was comte. Pretty tasty, though.

Yogurt on overnight.

Sunday/6-Mar-16: Dinner was Tagliatelle with Artichokes and Olive Oil for Two (web). Quite good this was. And a salad, using the rest of last night's lettuce sack. As long as salads are two nights in a row, this seems to be a way to make up for the fact that they no longer carry smaller sacks of lettuce.

For dessert, there was some Amazingly Easy Peach Cake (web), which has some amazingly bad instructions. How big is a large can of peaches? I used two of those no-longer-one-pound cans, one of peaches, the other of apricots. I added no sugar (instead of 2 cups), which was a bit extreme; maybe 1/2cup would have been ok. Buzzed all in the cuisinart, so it was extra easy. For the topping, I used sweetened coconut, which Ed bought in error, and added no extra sugar. Used walnuts, since I seemed to have no pecans. (Inventory error!) This was ok. The recipe said to use a 9x13 pan. I started pouring into that, but that would have made a pancake, so I changed to my square pan instead. (Sorry, to the washer-upper for the extra pan.) This was surprisingly good.

This week in the kitchen

Monday/15-Feb-16: Leftover night. Made up some brown rice. Ed had the leftover smore from last week and I had some carrot soup from the freezer.

Tuesday/16-Feb-16: Used up the sack of apples I bought a couple of weeks ago to make another jar of apple butter and my aunt's Apple Cake during the day.

Another leftover night, yay! The rest of the squash tart, followed by a salad topped by the rest of the beets from last weeks beet salad. And a bit of apple cake.

Wednesday/17-Feb-16: Shopping today. A little weird since I'll be leaving for a bit. Bought several beefy things for Ed, to try and get his hemoglobin levels up. Forgot to buy fish for tonight's dinner. The counter was busy when I first went by, so I went to get veggies, then forgot to go back.

So, tonight's dinner was Greek Shrimp with White Beans, Tomato Sauce, and Feta (web), which was fast and ok, but nothing special. Accompanied by the suggested go-with Lemon-Dill Orzo Pilaf (web). This was pretty good, and quite similar to what I usually do with orzo, except that the pasta was toasted in oil first and dill was added. More apple cake for dinner.

Thursday/18-Feb-16: Off for an early haircut today. Will keep to my current appointments, so my hair will be quite long for the next one.

Recombobbled the menu plan. When I return, I just need to make the list and we can shop the next day. At least I hope it works that way.

Working on Ed's hemoglobin, tonight's dinner was Boudin Noir aux Pommes—Blood Sausage with Apples (web). The title neglects to mention the calvados and cream, so of course it was good. Served with a bit of trio rice. Followed by a made-up veg/salad sort of thing. I steamed some broccoli. Then, in the same pan, sautéed some minced garlic, added two chopped, seeded tomatoes, S&P, a pinch of piment d'Esplette, and a pinch of basil. When it looked ready, I took it off the heat and stirred in some chopped mozzarella. Turned out pretty good.

Friday/19-Feb-16: Started to go to the pharmacy today to renew a prescription, only to discover I don't have a renewal and will have to go to the open surgery tomorrow morning. Sigh.

Dinner was Squash & Red Lentil Curry (web), not bad, but a bit bland. A bit less coconut milk might be nice, much more curry. Pretty good with the Mango Chutney I made a while ago.

Saturday/20-Feb-16: Almost packed. Dinner was a half recipe of White Bolognese (Everlasting, p164; cookbooker), served over polenta. Really yummy. Ed will have another meal while I'm gone. Served with a big salad. That was all that was needed.

Sunday/21-Feb-16: Travel day. Nothing happened in the kitchen.
