Monday/24-Feb-20: Yesterday afternoon, I started the batter for a no-knead bread that I got from an EAT-L friend. The recipe is slightly different from Lahey's classic, and it's still a puddle bread, but the timing works better for me. This morning I put the oven and casserole on the heat, then dumped the bread and formed a (flat) ball. After 30 minutes, into the oven to cook, 30 minutes covered and 15 minutes uncovered. I used T110 flour which is a close relative of whole wheat flour (T150). Not sure of the difference, but it's definitely a brown bread, with not much rise. Very tasty though and I like the schedule.
For dinner we had skinless, boneless chicken thighs, sprinkled with Penzey's Quebec Spice mix (a bit too salty) and grilled under the broiler. Then some "short spaghetti" with garlic butter and some snijbonen. Then some Häagen-Dazs mini ice cream cups for dessert.
Tuesday/25-Feb-20: Ed went off to the dentist this afternoon and came back saying he had to have mushy, cool food for dinner. So no magret, that was planned. I did a quick shuffle of the meal plan and we had a half recipe of Curried Lentils with Coconut Milk (web; cookbooker). This was easy and extra delicious; no hot stuff, but full of taste. Then we had some Abondance. Then a pair of chocolate-covered madeleines each.
Yogurt on overnight.
Wednesday/26-Feb-20: Nice dinner tonight. There was Magret de Canard à la Sauce Rose (web). I used Patricia Wells method for cooking the magret, which is the best. In the afternoon, I boiled some potatoes, then sautéed them in the rendered duck fat. There were also some steamed carrot coins, with parsley and lemon juice, and a little salad of grated broccoli stems, which was really good. In the afternoon, I made a half recipe of an Easy Blueberry Cobbler (MC) that wasn't bad. We ate well.
Thursday/2Feb-20: As we were leaving to do our weekly grocery shopping, I reached for RezaSpice and couldn't find it. Instead, having recently felt the need for some more interesting vegetarian meals, I grabbed A Year in a Vegetarian Kitchen, by Jack Bishop. It turns out I've used this a bit, but not recently. Nevertheless, I've found quite a number of interesting recipes so far.
Dinner was Baked Fish with Kumquats and Ginger (Uncommon, p273), with salmon. I've made this a few times and since kumquats have been at Leclerc for the last few weeks, I thought it was time again. Served with some "short spaghetti" and steamed asparagus. The rest of the blueberry cobbler for after.
Friday/28-Feb-20: Early in the day, I made up a batch of Tomato Sauce with Onion and Butter (ClassicItal, p152). At dinner time I made Spinach and Ricotta Dumplings (web). I made up a full recipe have frozen half, along with a goodly chunk of the tomato sauce. I used really parmesan, of course. Also, had to add at least double the amount of flour to get something that would hold together into a "dumpling." Served with a big salad. A pair of chocolate-covered madeleines each for after.
Saturday/29-Feb-20: Dinner was Ooroomas Badun—Fried Pork Curry (Solomon1, p138. This was yummy. Served with basmati rice and Gujerati Carrot Salad (MJ1, p170). For munchies we had Spicy Cucumber Wedges (MJ1, p172. For dessert, there was Faux Kheer of store-bought riz au lait, topped with chopped pistachios and ground cardamom. We're full.
Yogurt on overnight.
Sunday/1-Mar-20: Dinner was Lex's Roast Chicken (MC; web). I used two dejeunettes (half baguettes for the bread. The cuisinart did a good job for the sliced onions and celery. Yum. Served with a salad, using up the rest of yesterday's carrot salad. And some chocolate-covered madeleines for dessert.

This week in the kitchen
Monday/17-Feb-20: Dinner was Pork Loin Roast with Sauerkraut (ClayCook1, p45). The sauerkraut lost all its juice on the way home, so there was no gravy. I forgot to slice up the apple for the cooking, I sautéed the apple slices (peeled) and stirred them into the sauerkraut at the end. To go with, I mashed some potatoes and steamed some green beans. For dessert, we finished off the peach cobbler. We're happily full.
Tuesday/18-Feb-20: The wok burner on the stove was successfully replaced today. Hooray.
Dinner was Lasagnes Saumon Fumé et Poireau (VPG/may19, web). This was fairly easy to assemble and quite tasty. Followed by a salad. Then a pair of chocolate-covered madeleines each.
Wednesday/19-Feb-20: Leftovers night. We had the rest of the pork loin and sauerkraut, with some orecchiette, because I didn't feel like dealing with potatoes, and some steamed broccoli. Meanwhile I used up my (ancient) white chocolate from the US to make White Chocolate Pudding (web), and served with some defrosted blueberries. I used 3 tablespoons rather than 1/4 cup of sugar (sucre de canne) and it was still too sweet. We're stuffed.
Thursday/20-Feb-20: Shopping today.
Dinner was Broiled Fish Steaks with Fresh Ginger Sauce (Tabasco, p72) with tuna. This was yummy. The sauce would be good with white meat chicken and maybe even a pork chop. Served with French Beans with Sesame Seeds (RezaSpice, p118), which was good. And New Potatoes with Cumin (Q&E, p91), an old favorite. Finished off the White Chocolate Pudding for after. We're full.
Friday/21-Feb-20: Dinner was a half dose of Sheet-Pan Harissa Chicken with Carrots and Cauliflower (web), served with fettucelle (looks like wide, thick linguine). This was ok. The veggies are first steamed on the sheet pan, then the chicken added. I didn't much like the sweet of the onions, but the harissa made everything tasty. Nice crispy chicken skin. Some store-bought cheesecake for after.
Saturday/22-Feb-20: Dinner was a half dose of Creamy Polenta with Mushroom Ragù (web). This was good. A bit more polenta, maybe 1/2 more for the whole recipe, might have been nice, since the polenta disappeared under the ragù. Then a salad. Then the rest of the cheesecake. We were full.
Sunday/23-Feb-20: Dinner was a half dose of Rabbit and Lemon, a recipe I got somewhere, but neglected to record and can't find searching. The lemony bit was regular lemon and a preserved lemon. There was more juice left than I expected at the end, I thickened this with a bit of cornstarch (just too much really) and called it gravy. Served with trio rice and some steamed broccoli. Then a pair of chocolate-covered madeleines each for after.

This week in the kitchen
Monday/10-Feb-20: Dinner was a halfish dose of Pork & Snap Pea Lo Mein (web). This was okay but nothing special. I added some red pepper flakes to the sauce to give it a bit of zing. Then we finished the bread pudding.
Tuesday/11-Feb-20: Desvaux came to repair the stove. And broke a part. Now we don't know how long we be without the big wok burner and the plate warmer.
Off to the doctor and pharmacy, so dinner was late. We had Stir-Fried Shrimp with Broccoli and Chili-Garlic Sauce (MC). Pretty good stuff for minimal work. Mini ice cream cups for after.
Wednesday/12-Feb-20: Shopping today. I was discouraged from buying a bio chicken this week (for cooking next week) because they were almost €9 per kilo. Then I found one in the anti-gaspi bin for 30% off; only one day till its use-by date, so I popped her in the freezer right away.
I have to drive for a while, while Ed's foot heals. No cookbook reading. I realized after I carried it out to the car. Oops
Dinner was a half version of Tandoori Chicken (or Salmon) (web), using salmon. This was yummy, so I'll put the recipe back into the "bird" pile. Served with plain basmati rice and a halfish recipe of South Indian-Style Green Beans (MJ@Home, p147). Used snijbonen cut in 1" bits, with all the spices. Good stuff. Some store-bought riz au lait, tarted up with chopped pistachios and cardamom as if they were kheers.
Thursday/13-Feb-20: Dinner was Fusilli with Olive and Cauliflower (Lorenza, p99; MC). Good stuff and easy. We had some chocolate-covered madeleines for after.
Friday/14-Feb-20: Busy day with appointments for Ed at audiologist at and lab for xray of his foot. No break, thank goodness.
Lovely Valentine's meal at a local restaurant.
Saturday/15-Feb-20: Early meal today so we can go to a movie. I made, more or less, a half version of Vegetable Tian (web). This was pretty good; would be really good in the summer with veggies from the potager. My printout didn't have a picture, and I didn't remember how the "layers" were made. I had three separate, flat layers of potatoes, zucchini, and tomatoes. Good stuff. Then a big salad. We'll save dessert for the cinema.
Yogurt on overnight.
Sunday/16-Feb-20: Another round of Korean Sweet Potato Noodles (Japchae), with more of Jaffrey's Kimchee that's been ripening in the fridge. Beforehand we had some little weinie and bacon snacks that I got for new year's eve quite a while ago. Past their use-by date, but still a tasty snack. For afters I make a half recipe of a vary vague peach cobbler recipe I found while rummaging around. I'll do this again soon with pineapple, since we have some oldish cans to use up. We're full.

This week in the kitchen
Monday/3-Feb-20: Dinner was a halfish dose of Coquilles St. Jacques et Poireaux avec Pernod—Scallops and Leeks with Pernod (Franey, p134; cookbooker). These was really delicious, even though I neglected to stir in a bitter butter at the end. Served with the recommended Riz au Four—Baked Rice (Franey, p135; cookbooker), a third recipe was good for two, and Courgettes au Citron—Zucchini with Oil and Lemon (Franey, p59; cookbooker). No dessert.
Tuesday/4-Feb-20: Dinner was Spaghetti with Pecorino and Black Pepper (MW@Home, p194). Why haven't I made this before. Easy and delicious. Not elegant, but very satisfying. I used Parmesan instead of pecorino, because there was no pecorino at the store last week, and I don't usually have it on hand. Then a salad. The some St Felicien. We ate well.
Wednesday/5-Feb-20: Dinner was a halfish dose of Turmeric Roasted Chicken and Sweet Potatoes (web), with four quite-large-for-here chicken thighs. Pretty good it was, and easy.
Yogurt on overnight.
Thursday/6-Feb-20: Shopping today.
Dinner was a half recipe of Wan Kai Thai-Style Red Curry (Ainsley3, p75). Served with rice and with steamed snow peas. Some store-bought custard after.
Friday/7-Feb-20: Dinner was a two-thirds-ish dose of Portobello Shepherd's Pie (web). Not Portobello's, but I won't tell if you don't. It was pretty good, and we've got enough for another night. During the day used some threatening-to-go-stale bread to make some Double-Boiler Bread Pudding (MC, HandyBook); we had some of that for dessert.
Saturday/8-Feb-20: We had a nice Thai meal today, cooked for a charity by Reza Mahammad. No further food necessary.
Finished off Bocaux & Verrines on the way to our meal. Some interesting recipes, all of them serving six. Some of the portions really look like main dishes rather than starters or finishers.
Yogurt on overnight.
Sunday/9-Feb-20: We meant to go to a concert this afternoon, but Ed's still a bit coughy, so we decided not to go.
Our meal was leftover shepherd's pie, with some steamed broccoli and a little beet salad. (The beet salad was really little; I accidentally served it all to myself.) Then some bread pudding; it's going to give six servings this time.) We're full.
