This week in the kitchen

Monday/25-Feb-19: Dinner was a halfish recipe of Chicken Kebabs with Ras el Hanout (web); should have 400g of skinless, boneless chicken thighs, but I freeze them up in 250g lots, so that's what we had. This was quite good; expect you could also grill chicken thighs, maybe marinating a bit longer. And a halfish recipe of Grated Cucumber Salad with Oregano (Morocco, p73), which we've liked before. And some Moroccan couscous made with chicken stock. Chocolate-covered madeleines for dessert.

Yogurt on overnight.

Tuesday/26-Feb-19: Seemed to have survived my little surgery today (placing two extra-long T-tubes) in my ears.

Ed sort of fixed dinner, carrot sticks and pasta sauce from the freezer over pasta. And chocolate-covered madeleines for dessert.

Wednesday/27-Feb-19: We met Rusty today, then did our shopping.

Dinner was was a halfish recipe of Green Tea Salmon, a recipe from a box of Celestial Seasonings tea. It was good. Served with plain rice and Grilled Romaine with Feta and Nuoc Cham (web; CL/apr18). Finished the Langres cheese for afters.

Thursday/28-Feb-19: House-cleaning.

Dinner was about a 2/3 recipe of Paprika Veal Stew with Dumplings (Stews, p41; cookbooker). I used some chicken to make up the amount of liquid, not wanting to open another can of tomatoes. I just see that I forgot to add the sour cream at the end. Oh well. Then a salad. Then some mini ice cream bars.

Friday/1-Mar-19: House-cleaning again.

Dinner was 20 Minute Garlic Beef and Broccoli Lo Mein (web). Pretty good stuff. Might have been nice to marinate the beef in the sauce. Then some torsade (I think) that Ed brought from the boulangerie.

Saturday/2-Mar-19: Used up the rest of the butternut squash for Risotto with Winter Squash (VegPress, p157). Pretty easy and pretty tasty. Used up some chicken stock for most of the liquid. Then a salad. Then some little ice creams from the freezer.

Sunday/3-Mar-19: Chris and Amy arrived today.

For a starter there was Amilcar's Grilled Shrimp and Avocado Salad (BigFlav, p226). This was delicious. For a main, there was Roast Pork Tenderloin with Orange-Red Onion Salsa (BigFlav, p153). The roast pork took quite a while to get done, but it, and the salsa were great. Served with All-Purpose Rice and Beans (BigFlav, p262), a tasty and easy recipe. The shrimp salad was recommended as a starter and the beans were recommended as a go-with. For afters we worked on a plateau of cheese, Brie, Tomme de Savoie, and Fourme d'Ambert.

This week in the kitchen

Monday/19-Feb-19: Nothing happened in the kitchen today. We had lunch in Limoges with Cath before we went to visit a museum. The plat du jour was boudin noir with chestnuts. The boudins were cut lengthwise into three slices. I've sliced it crosswise, but never thought to slice it the other way. Made a nice presentation.

Tuesday/20-Feb-19: Dinner was a half recipe of Chicken Curry (Stews, p35; cookbooker), made with turkey oysters rather than kip filets. Not bad, a bit bland.

Wednesday/21-Feb-19: Shopping today.

Dinner was Codfish Steaks in Yogurt (MJInvite, 122), with lieu noir. This was so-so. The fish was good, but the sauce was overpowering. Served with Green Beans with Ginger (MJInvite, p151), which was good. But I didn't cook the green beans the full 40min; that seems entirely too much. Also some Turmeric Rice (Q&E, p100), which is easy and good. Some store-bought riz au lait for dessert.

Thursday/22-Feb-19: Dinner was a half dose of Spicy Cajun Shrimp (MW@Home, p255), an old favorite. Served over plain rice. Then a big salad. For dessert there was  some Cherry Cream Cheese Strudl (web), which was easy and pretty darn good.

Friday/23-Feb-19: Leftover pizza for dinner.

Yogurt on overnight.

Saturday/24-Feb-19: Dinner was a half dose of Pork Medallions with Mustard-Chive Sauce (web). Good stuff. With some steamed broccoli and pasta. Mini ice cream bars for after. Then off to see La Traviata at the cinema, with Sophie not yet in. As we got home, one of the neighborhood strays went into the backyard and there was a cat fight. We expect Sophie was involved. She hasn't come back in as we go to bed.

Sunday/25-Feb-19: No pasta-making tonight. We had Fettuccine alle Zucchini e Zaafferano (ClassPasta, p91) with fresh, store-bought pasta. Have made this before and it's still good, if a bit tedious prepping the zuke. And a salad. And half of a Langres cheese. And the rest of the cherry strudl. We're full.

Went through several vegetarian books looking for next month's cookbook-of-the-month, putting one out for recycling.

This week in the kitchen

Monday/11-Feb-19: Used a sack of dried figs to make Fig Jam (web; recipe). Seems promising; we'll see tomorrow.

Dinner was a half dose of Moroccan Chicken Skewer Pitas (web). I used turkey oysters instead of skinless, boneless chicken thighs. Used whole wheat tortillas instead of the pitas. Pretty good. Would have been even better with lamb, I think. Accompanied by Moroccan Couscous, a mix we like from the health food store. Followed by some chocolate-covered madeleines.

Tuesday/12-Feb-19: The fig jam is super yummy. Best fig jam ever.

Shopping today. Yes, an odd week.

Dinner was a half recipe of Salmon and Pesto with Rice (Stews, p88). Pretty good stuff. I used oven-dried tomatoes rather than cherry tomatoes. Then a salad. Then some pastries from the boulanger in Taponnat.

Yogurt on overnight.

Wednesday/13-Feb-19: Off to the anesthesiologist this afternoon, prior to minor surgery in two weeks.

Dinner was a halfish dose of Winter Vegetable Dal (EW/jan-feb14; web), served over long-grain brown rice. Took much longer to cook the veggies than advertised. I halved the spices as I should have, but we found it pretty bland. The go-with was Spelt Indian Flatbread aka chapatis (EW/jan-feb14; web). I  made a half dose, four chapatis. Used T110, semi whole-wheat, flour. Actually pretty good, but needed way more water than asked. Mini ice cream bars for dessert.

Thursday/14-Feb-19: Lunch out today. Yogurt on overnight.

Friday/15-Feb-19: Ate outside today, our first al fresco meal, much too early in the year. We had Penne Pasta with Brussels Sprouts (web). This was pretty good, but a bit dry. Then a salad. Then some chocolate-covered madeleines.

Saturday/16-Feb-19: For dinner, there was a made-up risotto using lamb stock from the freezer and some mushrooms from the fridge and some thyme. Pretty good it was. Then a big salad. Then we finished the kulfi. I'm full.

Sunday/17-Feb-19: Pizza tonight. This morning I grilled the veggies, cauliflower, broccoli, and zucchini. I had intended to make a pizza dough from Cook's Illustrated, but it only made two pizzas, slightly bigger than half of what I make, using (sort of) the recipe from my bread machine's cookbook. It was good. Some chocolate-covered cornflakes for afters.

This week in the kitchen

Monday/4-Feb-19: Thinking today that my "Project" goal for the year ought to be a bit more specific. There are big projects that take quite some time to acquire the ingredients and perform to the  required steps, and others that require a minimum of special shopping and no more than a day of preparation.

Dinner was a half dose of Creole Shrimp and Sweet Potato Grits (web). Following the advice of one comment, I used "pumpkin", really some kind of winter squash, instead of the sweet potatoes. Used red Leicester for the smoked Gouda. Made about a sixth dose of Creole Seasoning (web); used smoked paprika as part of the paprika asked. Onto the do-me-again list with the grits recipe. Then a big salad. Some chocolate-covered cornflakes Altogether a nice meal.

Yogurt on overnight.

Tuesday/5-Feb-19: Dinner was a half dose of Greek Meatball Stew with Brussels Sprouts (Stews, p57; cookbooker). Served over a bit of trio rice, followed by a nice "Greek" salad. Chocolate covered cornflake things for dessert.

Wednesday/6-Feb-19: Off to Soyaux today for doctor's appointment that's really Friday. Shopped at Grand Frais and Biocoop.

Easy dinner of pancakes from the freezer and fresh fruit from Grand Frais.

Thursday/7-Feb-19: Shopping today.

Dinner was Steak de Thon au Sésame (VPG). Unfortunately the cooking time for the tuna was too long so it was a bit overdone. A shame, since it would otherwise have been a good dish. (I've cancelled my VPG subscription and started another cooking magazine, Régal, that I liked the copy I bought a while ago. At least their recipes appear online.) Made some "patties" of leftovers, mashed squash, brown rice, and chickpeas with frozen peas, shallots, and garlic added. Edible, nothing special. Then a salad. Then some store-bought custards from the almost-out-of-date bin.

Friday/8-Feb-19: Back to the doctor today. My last T-tube is out. Will have surgery to have long-stemmed T-tubes inserted on both side. Appointment with anesthesiologist on Wednesday means jiggling of the menu plan.

Dinner was Ancho Chile Pork Chops with Pickled Pepper Relish (CL/jul17; web; cookbooker). Served with the go-with from the article, Charred Snap Peas with Creamy Tarragon Dressing and trio rice. Mini ice cream bars for dessert.

Saturday/9-Feb-19: Made some Fiery Habañero Hot Sauce (EAT-L; web; recipe). Easy to make and quite good, a bit like sriracha. I used half the maple syrup asked. The email I had said it made 1-1/2cup; I had more than 1 quart/liter! Next time I'll make only half.

Dinner was a half-ish dose of Roasted Cauliflower and Mushroom Quinoa Salad in Balsamic Vinaigrette (web), couscous instead of quinoa, blue cheese, home-made balsamic vinaigrette. Definitely so-so. The habañero sauce helped. Then a salad.

Sunday/10-Feb-19: Oops, forgot to notice that tonight's dinner wanted to marinate for 2 hours. Quick change of meal plan. And Ed's a bit sicky, so we postponed tomorrow's outing, meaning another change to the meal plan.

Dinner was a halfish dose of Scallops of Broccoli (Stews, p87). No baby carrots, so I cut regular ones into small spears, and didn't use as much as asked since it seemed like a lot about 2/3 of the way. No teeny scallops, so I quartered the ones I had. Pretty good. Ed added habañero hot sauce. Häagen-Dasz mini cups for dessert.

This week in the kitchen

Monday/28-Jan-19: After deciding that I'd continue with my cookbook-of-the-month project, I decided on C&B, from which I've cooked only one so-so recipe, as my February book. I chose some recipes and put them on the plan. Then decided I really didn't want to make any of these. Off the list with them, then on to my next choice, Stews. The time got late, so I ended up making tomorrow's planned dinner tonight. That was a half dose of Stir-Fried Spicy Lemon Grass Vegetables (HomTrav, p190). This easy to assemble and tasted pretty good. Then some mini ice cream bars.

Tuesday/29-Jan-19: Nice dinner tonight. This morning I made a half dose of Curry d'Échine de Porc Coco-Citronelle (C&V; web). (The web version is not the same source, but it's the same recipe.) I put everything in the crockpot and cooked it all day on Low. Knowing that French recipes are short on spicy things, I used the full recipe amount of curry powder and didn't seed my chile. At the end, I forgot the cilantro (which would have made it prettier) and the lime juice. Had a half lime sitting around, so we shared that, which made it really good. Served with rice and a half dose of Thai Cucumber Salad (Cost, p143). This is really good. Amazing how stinky those dried shrimp are before they're made into the dressing. Some Häagen-Dasz ice cream cups for dessert.

Yogurt on overnight.

Wednesday/30-Jan-19: The car wouldn't start this morning, so I didn't go to French. Boo.

Shopping today.

Dinner was a halfish recipe of Garlic Butter Baked Salmon in Foil (web). This was easy and very tasty. It was accompanied by some pasta (mafalda) with argula pesto (from the freezer) and some snijboned, boiled in the pasta water, before the pasta. All good. Followed by some store-bought riz au laits.

Thursday/31-Jan-19: Had an idea to make fresh pasta, but the day was just too busy. Instead we had fresh tagliatelle from the freezer with Tagliatelle coi Ceci (ClassPasta, p98). This was pretty good. I made a whole recipe and we ate it all. Then a big salad. Then a pair of chocolate-covered madeleines each.

Friday/1-Feb-19: Dinner at Cath's today. I took Fresh Ricotta Cheese and Limoncello Cake (web; recipe). Used only 1cup of sugar; made only about 2/3 of the glaze.

Yogurt on overnight.

Saturday/2-Feb-19: Finally put up the chicken stock that's been bubbling away on the stove.

Dinner was a half dose of Chili with Cornmeal Dumplings (Stews, p94; cookbooker). Ed had a mini ice cream bar for dessert, while I did without. Both of us munched on the limoncello cake during the day, and we're saving the rest for tomorrow.

Sunday/3-Feb-19: Ed and I both were full from our hot lunch (from the freezer), so I didn't make any dinner.
