This week in the kitchen

Monday/13-Jun-16: Dinner was Lamb Shanks with Onions and Apricots (H2CE, p488). Pretty good, easy, lots of wall clock time, but not that much interaction. Instead of browning the shanks in the pot, I used Bittman's method of browning in a 500F oven. Very good way to do this. Served with Dusoulier's Perfect Roasted Potatoes (HandyBook; web); always good these. And Chili Garlic Roasted Broccoli (web); this was easy and tasty, but the broccoli didn't get done in the advertised time. Think the bits should either be parboiled, or the cooking time should be quite a bit longer.

Tuesday/14-Jun-16: Dinner was Curried Potato Salad with Tuna (CL/mar07; web). A half recipe (should then serve 3), was a light dinner for two. Think this was meant as a side dish. Finished the rhubarb clafoutis for dessert.

Put beef on to marinate for tomorrow's meal.

Wednesday/15-Jun-16: Started the crockpot with Balsamic Pot Roast (web), then off for my haircut. That made an early meal before Ed went off to choir practice. So-so, it was. Served with Balsamic Green Bean Salad (web). That was a keeper.

Yogurt on overnight.

Thursday/16-Jun-16: Dinner was yummy, a halfish recipe of Sweet and Smoky Mexican Chicken (web), definitely a do-me-again. Unfortunately, I had only three pretty skimpy chicken thighs. Served with the leftover Balsamic Green Bean Salad. Mini magnums for dessert.

Friday/17-Jun-16: Me pooped today. And shopping day.

Dinner was Tilapia Corn Chowder (web), but with lieu noir. Pretty good stuff. Then a big salad. Two squares of chocolate for dessert.

Saturday/18-Jun-16: This weekend is a fête de la musique through the area (or maybe the country). We had a number of interesting concerts closeby. In the end we decided to stay home, since the weather is so bad, and we'd both been busy all day and would appreciate a quiet evening.

Dinner was Coriander-Crusted Pork Chops with Sautéd Apples and Caramelized Onions (web). This wasn't bad at all. Served with trio rice and Green Bean Salad. A pretty good dinner.

Yogurt on overnight.

Sunday/19-Jun-16: We planned to do too much today and ended up doing nothing. Pooh. Went to a movie, though, after having our dinner early. That was an Easy Curry (web) made with shrimp served over rice. Pretty good stuff.

This week in the kitchen

Monday/23-Dec-13: Yogurt on overday.

Just realized this morning, after spending some time looking for a recipe I'd found on a blog, that Bittman's How to Cook Everything is a franchise, not a single book. Oops.

Argh, why don't I remember to start thinking about holiday menus earlier in the month? Spent more or less all day working out what we might eat for eerste en tweede kerstdagen, plus the rest of the week. Showered in the evening so we can get to the shop early tomorrow.

Dinner was Hard-Boiled Eggs Masala (Q&E, p41). I actually found this recipe on-line and overlooked it in a quick run through my Jaffrey books, but there it is. Easy and fast and yummy. Over rice.

Tuesday/24-Dec-13: Shopping this morning, early for us at 10.00, along with half of the Charente, I think. But they had all the checkouts working so it was fairly quick getting in and out. If you wanted smoked salmon, you were in luck. There's ordinarily quite a good selection, but for the last week, that has overflowed into the bin where they usually keep the discounted, expiring food, a place I always check out. Lots of seafood being bought. I found an expiring (big sale) small pintade that we'll have for tweede kerstdag as a variation on one of my planned choices.

Put the meat for the civet on to marinate for tomorrow in the early afternoon.

Got the xmas tree up today.

Dinner was a half dose of Pasta with Eggplant, Anchovies, Olives, and Capers (H2CE, p136). Used the haberno spaghetti that Jody&Steve bought, which was more like linguine and in pretty short pieces after its travels. Very yummy and spicy in itself. Then a salad. Chocolate with hazelnuts after.

Wednesday/25-Dec-13: Gray, rainy, an windy with some thunderstorms. No snow, but we did have a bit of hagel and a thunderstorm. Nice holiday dinner, with only the two of us. Made some ABM Authentic French Bread with one cup of whole wheat flour to go with.

Thursday/26-Dec-13: Not the fancy dinner I'd planned, but nice enough. For a starter there was a loose version of Salade de Mâche aux Magrets de Canard (web). I used arugula instead of mâche and the basil vinaigrette left from yesterday. It was all good. For the main, there was a loose version of Chicken Stuffed with Rice, Pine Nuts, and Preserved Lemon Slices (MedHot2, p149). One, it was a pintade (guinea hen) instead of a chicken, since those were on sale when we shopped. Two, I didn't want to stuff the bird, so I spatchcocked it and did the rice separately. Three, my yogurt is plain old cow's milk, not sheep, sorry. And my preserved lemons were store-bought, not home-made. The rice turned out rather like a pilaf, quite good. The pintade was also good, although it was only rubbed with yogurt and paprika. For dessert, there was Cranberry Upside-Down Cake (MC 2BTried, apparently from Gourmet mag, Nov94). I reduced the sugar in the topping (or bottoming?) and in the cake itself, but it was good. After four courses yesterday, we couldn't manage the same today, so the nice cheeses are lingering on in the fridge.

Yogurt on overnight.

Friday/27-Dec-13: An unexpected Jaffrey dinner tonight, all off-plan. Started with Onion Fritters (Q&E, p20), i.e., onion bhaji, accompanied by Fresh Green Chutney (Q&E, p113) using mint from the garden that's hanging on very late into the season. Then a Garlicky Mushroom Masala Omelet (Q&E, p43). That's two eggy dinners this week; guess it's time to watch that a bit.

Saturday/28-Dec-13: Dinner was a halfish recipe of Vegetable Pad Thai (web). I made about two thirds of the sauce for half of the veg. Ish. Non-traditional, but quite good. For a completely non-tradtional finish, there was some St Felicien and Delice du Poitou.

Sunday/29-Dec-13: Dinner was an Asparagus Quiche (MC 2BTried), only vaguely following the recipe. Used the last pie crust from the freezer. Pretty good it was. Then a salad. Then some Lindt dark chocolate Pyreneëns.

This week in the kitchen

Monday/31-Oct-11: We forgot to get bread while we were out yesterday, so I made some Authentic French Bread (Magic, p22, but out of head) on Rapid this morning, so we'd have bread for lunch. Then I made sandwiches of the leftover Mediterranean chicken burgers, with mango chutney and slices of cucumber. Not too bad.

Dinner was a half dose of Pork Chops with Hot Garlic Sauce (MC), grilled on the stove. Tasty. With some polenta and some roasted broccoli with garlic and a few slow-roasted tomatoes.

Tuesday/1-Nov-11: Some replanning involved for today. Most restaurants are closed on Tuesday, so we had our anniversary lunch out on Sunday. I thought I'd make some lamb cutlets with quince jelly glaze for a special dinner, but remembered I've got crockpot lamb vindaloo on for tomorrow, so did a replan. Made an interesting menu I found on the web, but discovered this evening that I made the wrong main course, which explains why the menu was so unbalanced. Will have to repeat the sides with the recommended main course before too long.

So, dinner was Ancho Chile, Shrimp, and Pasta (SimplyRecipes), a very tasty and quick main course. I served it with a couscous pilaf (totally useless because of the pasta, but the leftovers will make a nice salad one of these nights) and North African Spiced Carrots (EatingWell), which were very tasty. Some tiramisu from the freezer for dessert.

Put the lamb for tomorrow's vindaloo on to marinate overnight.

Wednesday/2-Nov-11: Yogurt on overday in the yogurt maker. Lamb Vindaloo (R&WSlowCook, p112, cookbooker) on overday in the crockpot. When we got back from the zoo, I boiled off the extra liquid from the vindaloo while the rice cooked. Pretty good, although nowhere need as hot as vindaloo should be. For dessert there was toasted Belgian waffle topped with defrosted raspberries and some raspberry sherbet.

Thursday/3-Nov-11: Cupboard is getting bare. Shopped early last week and late this week.

Dinner was Spaghetti Carbonara with a Poached Egg (MC), followed by a salad. Simple and tasty.

Friday/4-Nov-11: Shopped this morning.Dinner at our local quiz tonight (where we wiped out the competition), so nothing happened in the kitchen.

Saturday/5-Nov-11: Nice dinner tonight. Started with a little salad made from the leftover couscous gussied up. Then Coquilles à la Florentine (MC 2BTried), which apparently came from Cooking Light a long time ago. Quite nice, although a bit of the instructions seems to have gotten lost at some point; all the online versions I've found have the same problem. Is the sauce under, over, or mixed with the spinach and scallops? Accompanied by some orzo, a trifle too lemony tonight. Then a big salad.

Ended up with Pear Clafoutis (H2CE, p642, cookbooker). Very nice this was. Comice pears.

Yogurt on overnight.

Sunday/6-Nov-11: Working on my preserved lemon stash, dinner was Chicken Tagine with Olives and Preserved Lemons (NAfrica, p61). Turns out that I made this before (in July), but didn't mark the book at all and managed to keep the page spotless. It was good again. Served with couscous and a repeat of the North African Spiced Carrots. Pear clafoutis for dessert.

This week in the kitchen

Monday/14-Jun-10: Back from Nohant. Cooked some rice while we lunched and put it in the fridge to cool for some pineapple fried rice with scallops as James mentioned quite a while ago. Oops! No scallops in the freezer. Ended up making and easy old favorite, Curried Penne with Shrimp (MC, 365OneDish) only to discover that we were almost out of frozen, cooked shrimp too. Egads, inventory control is getting pretty poor around here. Made a salad with lettuce from the garden, the leftover asparagus, and boiled potatoes. For afters, we had about half of the chunk of Brie de Meaux that I got last week, along with the really good bread that we got at a boulanger in La Châtre as we were leaving there.

All the rummaging in the freezer reminded me to get the lamb out to defrost for a lamb saag attempt. Started a batch of yogurt that will be ready in the morning.

Tuesday/15-Jun-10: Cooking really not on my mind today. Late lunch of Moroccan Chickpea Tagine with Harissa (MC), only inventory control seems to have failed again, so it was black beans in place of the missing chickpeas. We finished off one of those Napolitain cakes for dessert. Oink. Now we have to flip a coin to see who's going to the boulanger this afternoon for bread.

Wednesday/16-Jun-10: For lunch, I made the lamb version of Beef or Lamb with Spinach (Q&E, p36, reviewed at cookbooker). Yummy!

The limoncello is straining. Certainly smells like lemon.

Thursday/17-Jun-10: Lunch was the ground meat variation of Curried Rice Noodles with Vegetables (H2CE, p174, reviewed at cookbooker), using ground pork for the CookbooksEtc contest. Another winner and a very versatile recipe.

Friday/18-Jun-10: Shopped today and come home with many things that now need to be used up. A surprise was finding blueberries to use for the next CookbooksEtc dish — and I've picked the dish too! Also ran into a treasure trove of cilantro. One box for cilantro pesto, if I can find that recipe, and another for whatever I can find. Need to sit down tomorrow and plan all the use-me-ups, especially the blueberries and cilantro. Earlier in the day I dropped in on the market in Montbron with Yvonne. There was an organic stand there with some good-looking stuff, a regular veggie stand with a good selection, a stand with volaille, and cheese and fish stands. Might be worth returning to. Both the market and the grocery store had good-looking chard today, so it might be time to replan the Swiss Chard Torte for Cooking Italy.

Tonight I finally make the Thai fried rice with scallops, although it was a bit "bare" since I couldn't find the shrimp paste I thought I had in the back of the fridge. Will try this again whenever I can find shrimp paste. It was pretty tasty as it was, but the extra oomph might have good. It was a very uncolorful looking plate, though. Grilling the scallops and plopping them on top of the rice might help, but better might be to stir in a lot of chopped cilantro just before serving.

Saturday/19-Jun-10: Lunch today was Papillotes de Bar aux Asperges (C&Z, p98, cookbooker), using flétan (halibut) instead of sea bass, accompanied by some parsleyed pasta and followed by a salad. The fish was a nice idea. Dusoulier has you cut the bits of asparagus in half lengthwise so they'll cook in the same time as the fish, but it didn't work. They should have been steamed halfway before assembling the packets. Next time ...

Later I made he Tarte Amandine à la Myrtille (C&Z, p188, cookbooker) for the CookbooksEtc contest. Very good and easy. We'll probably finish this off for breakfast!

Sunday/20-Jun-10: Blueberry tart for breakfast and as dessert after dinner. All gone. Yum.

Taking advantage of the first sunny, if a bit cold, day in quite a while, Ed agreed to barbecue our dinner. I defrosted two coquelets, spatchlocked them, and used the rub from Grilled West Indies Spice Rubbed Chicken Breast with Grilled Banana (Thrill, p165). This was really tasty. I've frozen about half of the rub to use again. Cooked some sweet potatoes like Dusoulier's roast potatoes, using a goodly dash of homemade cajun spice for flavoring; these were good. Made some Green Bean and Corn Salsa Salad (MC) ; also good. Have bits of both of these left. After finishing off the tarte amandine, we had a dab of limoncello. Lemony, but awfully sweet, and I didn't even use an especially sweet recipe. Think I'll put the bottle in the freezer, rather than the fridge, since it's probably better icier.

Started yogurt to be ready in the morning.
