Monday/19-Aug-19: Busy day today, a trip to the vet, a visit from the mayor and vice-mayor, and a trip to the gendarmerie. Didn't feel like cooking what was on the plan, so exchanged with tomorrow's meal.
We had a halfish version of Spicy Thai Basil Chicken (web). Chopped up some aiguillettes to use instead of ground chicken. This was fast and easy. Served with a bit of basmati rice. Some mini ice cream bars for dessert. Then the last bit of our Toulouse chocolate.
Tuesday/20-Aug-19: Dinner was a half dose of Tortino di Pomodori—Hot Tomato Pie (TuscTable, p108). Except for the part about peeling the tomatoes, this was really easy and very tasty. Then a salad. Then we finished the buttermilk ice cream
Wednesday/21-Aug-19: Dinner was a half dose of Poblanos Stuffed with Cheddar and Chicken (web). Simmered the chicken to cook and used the stock for long-grain brown rice. Had lots of that; froze up enough for some fried rice. English cheddar maybe wasn't the best cheese choice, but still it was quite edible. For second course, I made up a salad of home-grown tomatoes, feta, onions, cuke, and mint. Tasty. Chocolate-covered madeleines for after.
Thursday/22-Aug-19: Shopping today.
Vanessa was on our porch today in spite of the Privé sign. Too much excitement with the maire and gendarmes. We think V actually called the gendarmes. I tried, but they sent me to the mairie. The answer machine message there gave me the maire's cell phone.
Dinner was Roast Cod with Upmarket Mushy Green Peas (How2Eat, p194). Used lieu noir instead of cod. The fish was slightly overdone, cooked much shorter time than asked. The mushy peas were good, certainly better than those from a can. Served with some small boiled potatoes. Chocolate custard things for dessert.
Friday/23-Aug-19: Made some Pineapple Upside-Down Cake (MC) using my old recipe, originally from Betty Crocker, but modified. The recipe in Joy of Cooking for this is a fancy cake with separated eggs. Not what this rustic cake is supposed to be.
I bought another packet of poblanos yesterday and we had a half recipe of Chiles Rellenos Casserole (CL90, p147). Pretty good stuff. Meant to make guacamole, but all four avocados in house were bad. Served with a tomato salad, almost a salsa sort of thing, that was pretty good. Ed's t-shirt showed his dinner, a splash of red wine, some tomato juice, and some caramel from the cake. Oh well.
Saturday/24-Aug-19: Nice afternoon with Cath, we went to the Marché des Potiers in Montbron, then to the art exhibit at the chateau there. It was nice in spite of being so hot, although the chateau was cool inside. We came home, had some tea, and then dinner.
We started with Salade de Mâche aux Magrets de Canard. Not sure where I found this recipe (I just wrote down the ingredients), but it's really simple and delicious. Per person: 4 tranches magret de canard seche, fat removed, 3 sun-dried tomatoes (I made lengthwise slices), 20g of pine nuts, and some parmesan shavings, all topped with a little vinaigrette.
Our main was Escalopines de Veau de Noix et de Roquefort (web). This was easy and super yummy. Used all the topping for slightly less meat. Served with pasta and pesto. Then some Pineapple Upside Down Cake. Nice dinner.
Sunday/25-Aug-19: Dinner from the freezer more or less. Ed barbecued that had marinated for a bit in charmoula. And the rest of the little potatoes I bought on Thursday with some cilantro pesto. And some Courgettes with Lemon, Caper Dressing (web). (Turns out I made these before, in nov14.) All were good. We finished the Pineapple Upside Down Cake for afters.
Yogurt on overnight.

This week in the kitchen
Monday/29-May-17: Early meal today. We had a halfish recipe of Spicy Jerk Pork Chicken with Pepper Fried Rice (BHG/apr13; web) Well, it would have been pork if I'd defrosted that. Instead I defrosted a baggieful of boneless, skinless chicken thighs. Used a red bell pepper and one of the French vaguely spicy pepper/chiles for the banana pepper, and shaoxing wine for the white wine or dry sherry. Very good and easy.
Discovered I have lots of ground almonds in the fridge freezer. Need to use those up.
Tuesday/30-May-17: We were supposed to eat out today, but Ed forgot, so I made a clean-out-the-fridge meal. Searched for broccoli tomato sauce blue cheese and came up with this, which I did very loosely, using roasted broccoli instead of spinach. Had some leftover tomato sauce and filled that out with two tomatoes. Wasn't bad.
Wednesday/31-May-17: Shopping today. Our dishwasher is on the fritz. Ed's been working on it but without much success. First it was saying it was clogged up, as it does occasionally, then it's saying it's leaking. On-going issue.
Dinner was a halfish recipe of Grilled Salmon with White Bean and Arugula Salad (CL/jun16; web). Very nice dinner salad. I'm going to stick the recipe in Pat's salad book, since it fits right in with that.
We went to sit outside to eat and it immediately started drizzling. Because of the forecast high winds (which haven't happened so far), the pergola is furled. So we had a slightly damp dinner. But tasty.
Yogurt on overnight.
Thursday/1-Jun-17: Dinner tonight was a halfish recipe of Pollo all'Arribiata—'Enraged' Chicken (TuscTable, p123). Good it was. Was surprised to find a bottle of chianti (Piccini) at Leclercc to use for the sauce. We finished the rest of it, so feel a bit happy tonight. Lots of sauce left, which we'll have over pasta for lunch one of these days. Served with tagliatelle (end of a multi-grain one plus some regular) with olive oil and chopped parsley as suggested.
Ed fixed the dishwasher today -- yay!
Friday/2-Jun-17:Lunch out today, so not much happened in the kitchen. Replanned our menus a bit, since we had steaks for lunch and there was more beef due up in a few days.
Oops, dishwasher not fixed. In moving it back in place, a connection came loose. Ed found this and plugged it back in. In the wrong place. Electric fizz. No more dishwasher. Back to hand washing for a bit.
Made a half recipe of Two-Tomato Jam (BoldVeg, p232), which is a go-with for tomorrow's meal.
Yogurt on overnight in anticipation of something needing yogurt in a few days.
Saturday/3-Jun-17: Interesting meal today. Our main was a half recipe of Grilled Eggplant and Toasted Pecan Salad (BoldVeg, p78). I see belatedly that this is supposed to be a salad or side dish; that explains why it seemed so skimpy. Served it over brown rice. It was good, but nothing extra special, but ... The recommended Two-Tomato Jam go-with (really a chutney) that I made last night was a star, definitely a keeper. To fill up the plate, I made Spiced Beets (30MinInd, p88), which I made several times already. Pretty and tasty. For dessert there was Carrot-Apple Halwa (BoldVeg, p240). This was pretty good and easy enough to do while other things a happening.
Sunday/4-Jun-17: Early meal today, a half recipe of Pasta Pentimento (EatingTog, p170; cookbooker). A really yummy pasta dish. Then a salad. Then the last of the halwa.

This week in the kitchen
Monday/5-Sep-16: Dinner was Salsa di Salsiccie—Sausage Sauce (TuscTable, p87; cookbooker) served over most of our remaining pici. I used the last of Hazan's sausage from the freezer to make about a 2/3 recipe. We ate it all, but it probably would have served three easily, and should have served four. Very simple to make and very tasty. Improvised a little salad of sliced cucumber (from the potager) and red onion with S&P, dill, sour cream, and a slog of white wine vinegar. We had some chocolate squares when we took Pogo for a walk.
Tuesday/6-Sep-16: This was clearing out the fridge day. We had Moroccan Eggplant Salad with Preserved Lemons and Olives (web), which was quite good. Used eggplants from the potager. And there was Broccoli with Preserved Lemon Yogurt (web), also good. Served over brown rice. (After I started this I realized it should have been couscous. Oh well.) Mini ice cream bars for dessert.
Wednesday/7-Sep-16: Shopping today.
Starting to cook from Time-Life's Middle Eastern Cooking tonight. We had fish and a radish salad, along with some plain couscous. And Crème Fraîche Ice Cream (MC) for after. All yummy.
Yogurt on overnight.
Thursday/8-Sep-16: Made up a batch of Guillano Hazan's Homemade Sausage (30MinPasta, p162; HandyBook) and froze it.
Dinner was leftover cheese-and-onion enchiladas and Spanish rice, with a new batch of guacamole. I had a bunch of avocados, but most were bad. So annoying.
Friday/9-Sep-16: In the morning I made a Peach and Raspberry Galette (web). The recipe is actually for peaches and blueberries, but I'd been told raspberries were good, and I had some in the freezer, so ... It was extra yummy. Any nice fruit combination could be used. I used my new Kenwood to mix the dough, but it might be easier in the Cuisinart, using Jones' alligator technique.
For lunch, I was going to made a salad with avocado and slices of dried magret. But, I found last night that my avocados were mostly bad and had none left for today. Instead, using the snow peas that I had in the fridge waiting to be used, I made, more or less, Salade Pois Gourmand et Magret de Canard Fumé (web); I had only a half fan on alternating peas and slices. Served with a bit of salad and a dressing of 1 part honey, 2 parts balsamic vinegar, and 3 parts olive oil. I was too lazy to go get the camera, since this was deserving of a picture and quite tasty.
We went to a picnic/play in the evening. Brought some bread, cheeses, wine, and the galette. A very enjoyable evening.
Saturday/10-Sep-16: The chicken didn't get marinate as long is it could have, but Spicy Stir-Fried Chicken with Lemon Grass (MJFarEast, p111; cookbooker) was still very good. I made a halfish recipe with three skinned chicken thighs, not cut into small bits. Very yummy. Served with some plain basmati rice and a half recipe of Spicy Thai Cucumber Salad (MaiPham, p40; cookbooker). For afters, we finished off the bits of cheese left from last night. Nice dinner.
Sunday/11-Sep-16: We had some of the galette for breakfast today. Something went awry with the last batch of yogurt. It has an odd texture and taste. After the first day, neither of us want to eat it, so I'll get a new starter when we shop next week.
Made a pot of chicken stock today, using only half the bones in the freezer. Will finish it off tomorrow.
Dinner was another meal from Time-Life's Middle Eastern Cooking, lamb and eggplant and the yummy radish salad again. Very nice dinner. We finished the galette for dessert.

This week in the kitchen
Monday/27-Jun-16: Shelled my kilo of fava beans today.
Dinner was Marinated Chicken Breasts (Angostura, p47), a half recipe with two kip filets, on the bbq. Easy and very tasty. Served with Potato Salad with Bacon Bits and Mangetout Salad with Mustard Dressing (web). The mangetout (snow peas) salad used up the rest of the peas that I had. I liked this a lot; Ed thought it was okay. I also liked the potato salad, and was surprised that Ed liked it, since he usually doesn't go for vinegary things. A pari of chocolate squares each for dessert.
Tuesday/28-Jun-16: Parboiled and peeled the fava beans for dinner, which was Spaghetti con Fave e Pomodoro (Lorenza, p102). This wasn't a favorite from this book, which is usually pretty dependable. I used too much tomato purée, but, still, the whole thing didn't come together quite right. The fava beans were lost in the sauce. It asked for colored spaghetti (red, green, or yellow), but I used plain old linguine without color. Then a salad with leftover blue cheese dressing. Then we each had a bit of morbier, bought on sale last week.
Wednesday/29-Jun-16: Another stab at Northwest, there were Basque Potatoes for dinner. Followed by a big salad using the rest of the mustard dressing from Monday's salad. Then Ed went off to choir practice. (This concert is Friday night. Will be glad when it's over!)
Thursday/30-Jun-16: I shopped at Intermarché today while Ed was at his first choir practice of the day. Forgot to buy eggs, duh, so may have to go somewhere to get those.
Starting a day early for July's Cookbook Countdown, dinner was Spicy Pan-Fried Cod [need link to post]. I used the extra boiled potatoes from last night's dinner to make a reduced version of Spicy, Sour Potatoes with Cumin and Amchoor (SpiceKitch, p50). Used a zucchini to make a reduced version of Zucchini in a Yogurt Dressing (SpiceKitch, p58). Both of these are old favorites. Thinking the potatoes looked pretty skimpy, I also made some plain basmati rice. For dessert we had little store-bought chocolate mousse things.
Friday/1-Jul-16: Early lunch today before Ed went off the his choir performance. We had Insalata de Tonno e Patate—Tuna&Potato Salad (TuscTable, p125). Served on a plate lined with lettuce leaves. The salad was supposed to serve four, but it was a lovely meal for two.
Saturday/2-Jul-16: Busy morning in the kitchen:
Yogurt on overnight.
Sunday/3-Jul-16: We had our main meal early today so we could go to a concert in the early evening. We had Shrimp with Curry Leaves and Fenugreek accompanied by Jeera Rice. As a go-with there were some Spicy Cucumber Wedges (MJ1, p172). All were yummy. For dessert, I froze the Aztec Hot Chocolate Ice Cream I made yesterday. Yummy stuff. And, yes, hot. I put in the max suggested amount of chipotle powder, which was maybe a bit too much. But very very good.

Saturday/2-Jul-16: Busy morning in the kitchen:
- Picked last weekend's chicken and made stock from the bones.
- Made Oven-Roasted Tomatoes (HandyBook, MC)
- Make up the broth for Aztec "Hot" Chocolate Ice Cream (Scoop, p29). Only 1/2cup sugar (sucre de canne), 3tsp chipotle.
- Started Lime Pickle to set aside for 10 days. (That's the most asafoetida in one dish I've ever seen.)
- Cooked up hominy in the chicken stock. Froze two lots of 2 cups; used the rest for dinner.
- Made Tamarind & Date Chutney and froze half.
- Made Croutons (Art, p177)
Yogurt on overnight.

This week in the kitchen
Monday/11-Apr-16: Yogurt on overday. And in the dining room, since Ed had the electricity off in the kitchen today to install under cabinet lights.
Dinner was leftover meatloaf (still good) with Feuilleté aux Courgettes, Fromage Frais et Olives Noires (web), sort of. I forgot to buy fromage frais, so I used pyramid (goat) cheese instead. All was good.
Tuesday/12-Apr-16: Sophie brought in a bat today. It was still alive, so I put on a heavy pair of oven mitts and caught it gently between my hands. Took it outside and put it on the honeysuckle so it could rest safely. Instead it flew away, circling the cour.
More leftovers today. This time the broiled chicken from Ed's Saturday picnic (still very good) with a halfish recipe of Asparagus Ambush (TLNewEng, p76) as a side dish. This might actually be meant as a sandwich, although it was in the vegetable section. I split a demi-baguette, so one end of the "boat" is not really closed. The asparagus are topped with a lemony white sauce. This might make a nice starter in smaller breads. (Idea from Barbara D.)
Wednesday/13-Apr-16: Shopping today, back at Leclerc.
Dinner was Monkfish with Sage and Roasted Garlic (web). Monkfish (lotte) is on sale this week. It's a good fish, but I need to learn to ask them to clean and filet it for me. That was a pain. Otherwise, the recipe is easy and tasty. Served with brown rice and some steamed asparagus. Strawberries with marscapone-cream for dessert. Then I had a pair of chocolate easter eggs, while Ed worked on his bunny.
Thursday/14-Apr-16: Dinner was a half recipe of Greek Chicken Stew with Cauliflower and Olives (web) served over brown rice. The recipe said it would serve 4-6; the whole recipe might have served 6, since we were quite full with our half. Strawberries and ice cream for dessert.
Yogurt on overnight.
Friday/15-Apr-16: Made Apple-Plum Butter (HandyBook) during the day. Managed to burn it fairly badly, so the yield was low.
Used one of the eggplants needing using to make a two-thirds-ish dose of Eggplant and Yogurt Spread with Red Onion and Olives (O&C, p35). In the fridge, and we'll see how that is tomorrow.
Dinner was the last of the leftover meatloaf, with some buckwheat crozets tossed in a bit of garlic butter, plus some Baked Eggplant Slices (TooMany, p114), an old favorite, to use up the last eggplant. A pretty good dinner, if a bit old-fashioned.
Saturday/16-Apr-16: Had planned to make pasta today, but no oomph, and other things to do.
Our main meal was in the afternoon, since we went to a movie. It was Pepper and Anchovy Pasta Sauce (MarCuc, p149) with spaghetti, using up the bell peppers in the fridge. Then a very big salad. That was all.
Later we had some crackers spread with the Eggplant and Yogurt Spread. I liked a lot, Ed not. Oh well.
Sunday/17-Apr-16: Dinner was Acquacotta—Tomato and Bread Soup (TuscTable, p105). Made it using tomato "sauce" from the potager rather than peeling and deseeding tomatoes. In the end it was good, and indeed serves four, but I have no idea how close it was to real acquacotta (cooked water?). There was way too much celery for my taste, so I put some of that in the freezer for my next batch of chicken stock. And too much water to be added; my medium saucepan would be overflowing. The result was good even though I manage to break both egg yolks. Put the remaining bit in the freezer for another night. Also finished the last two Feuilletés aux Courgettes, Fromage Frais et Olives Noires; they held up quite well.
