This week in the kitchen

Monday/25-Oct-21: Ed had his second carpal tunnel surgery today. They must have used a different kind of anesthetic because he was finger-wiggling directly after the surgery.

A one-handed meal tonight. We had West Indian Salmon Patties from the freezer, accompanied by a more-or-less quarter recipe of All-Purpose Rice and Beans (BigFlav, p262) and some canned corn. And some of Sara Lee's Crumb Cake for after. We're full. And tired.

Tuesday/26-Oct-21: Tonight's dinner was a loser. Seemed like a good idea, and it's well-reviewed, but neither of us cared much for it. I made a half dose of Pasta with Mushrooms and Pumpkin-Gorgonzola Sauce (web). We ate it all, but not with much enthusiasm.

A small salad next. Then we finished the Crumb Cake.

Wednesday/27-Oct-21: Oscar to the vet today, and me to the hearing aid shop for a new pair.

Dinner was Pie's Curried Shrimp and Scallops (MC), an old favorite. Still yummy, and easy. Served over trio rice. And we finished the Raw Beet Salad, which was still good.

Thursday/28-Oct-21: Shopping today.

Dinner was a half recipe of Gratin of Cod with Leek, Olives, and Truffle (optional) (Seaver2, p93). No truffle, I was too lazy to open the jar. After last week's wonderful salmon, I had high expectations for this, but was disappointed. The black olive were too strong for the fish. Result was so-so. Unimaginatively, I served this with a bit of tagliatelle. We had boulangerie-bought tarts for after.

Friday/29-Oct-21: We picked Chris and Amy up at the Limoges train station this morning and lunched in Limoges at La Table du Couvent.

In the evening I made a so-so soup and we munched on cheeses and terrines.

Saturday/30-Oct-21: Dinner was Za'atar Lamb Chops* (web; GD). These are yummy and very easy. Ed grilled them. Served with Moroccan couscous (bio, store-bought) and Moroccan Carrots (1Good, p59). All good stuff. Then we finished off the cheese from yesterday. Then some home-made vanilla ice cream, with a touch of almond extract, which was nice, for after. Then some delicious chocolate from Maison Chaudun in Paris.

Sunday/31-Oct-21: Lunch out today, then Chris and Amy to the Limoges train station in pouring rain.

This week in the kitchen

Monday/16-Aug-21: Dinner was Creamy Blueberry Chicken Salad (web; CL/aug14). I used chicken from the last roast that I did (via the freezer). Blueberries from our own plants. (Which Ed told me about after I'd defrosted some. Have to make some kind of dish tomorrow to use them up.) That didn't look quite enough, so I made a salad of some roasted beets, a small can of corn, cilantro, and a lime vinaigrette. No dessert.

Tuesday/17-Aug-21: Used some of my roasted beets plus some leftover brick hanging around in the fridge to make, more or less, Beet and Feta Samosas (MadeIndia, p48). We had them as a starter while I was finishing the rest of dinner. Not as good as expected; the filling was better than the baked result. Dinner was West Indian Salmon Patties (web; GD). As before, I made four patties instead of six and two are now in the freezer for another night. Served with All-Purpose Rice and Beans (BigFlav, p262), a regular. Made a quarter recipe and still have some left to tart up for another meal. For after, I used yesterday's defrosted blueberries, plus the remains of some raspberries and strawberries I impulse-bought last week, to make Easy Berry Cobbler (MC; HandyBook). We're full.

Wednesday/18-Aug-21: Pizza out tonight before a concert. Nothing happened in the kitchen.

Thursday/19-Aug-21: Shopping today. Our favorite boulangerie is on holiday till September.

Dinner was Spicy Grilled Fish (Q&E, p74) with salmon. Good stuff. It surprises me to find a new, good recipe in this book, since I've used it so much. There was a quarter recipe of Rice with Mushrooms and Mustard Seeds (Q&E, p102) for a side and Fresh Tomato Salad (Q&E, p107). Some store-bought riz au laits with caramel for after.

Friday/21-Aug-21: Dinner was a half dose of Pasta Pentimento* (EatingTog, p170) over whole-wheat spaghetti. Good stuff for so easy. For a salad, there was a halfish dose of Favorite Broccoli Salad* (web; GD; GD). This was good, if not something that went especially well with the pasta. Knowing that Ed doesn't like raw broccoli, I cooked it very briefly in the pasta water. (Was just surprised to find this salad on my DoMeAgain list! I wrote then what we said tonight at table, that this would be very good for a bbq.) For dessert there was some Jam Tea Cake (GD) with apricot jam.

Saturday/21-Aug-21: In the morning I made the sauce for tonight's dinner, and salted the chicken for tomorrow.

Dinner was a half dose of Pasta in Chilli Tomato Sauce (HomTrav, p222); this would have served three pretty eaisly. Served over linguine; have a bit left for a lunch. Tingly stuff. An Italian tomato sauce with ginger, chilies, and chili oil. Tasty.

Some Jam Tea Cake for after.

Sunday/22-Aug-21: Dinner was Romertopf Clay-Baked Chicken, Stuffed with Serrano Ham and Olives (MedClay, p76). I cooked the stuffing separately. This was finished in a, to me, unusual way.  The chicken was taken out of the oven and out of the pot. The bottom was then emptied (to make a sauce with the juices), topped with a wire rack, the chicken put on that, and all back in the oven for another 10min. I've never seen this technique before, but it made for a nicely crisp skin, not usual for Romertopf.

Served with Lemon-Roasted Potatoes with Bay Leaves* (VegHarv, p231). This was good, of course, although I could have cut the potatoes into smaller chunks. I used the rest of my roasted beets to make a small version of Cold Beetroot with Cream (Pomiane, p180), an old favorite.

More Jam Tea Cake for after; it'sgetting a bit dry now.

This week in the kitchen

Monday/7-Sep-20: Easy dinner tonight. Ravioli à la Panna using raviolis filled with ham, peas, and mozzarella. Made a big salad with the rest of yesterday's arugula, and a big home-grown tomato. Used some of the tomato slices to make mini insalatas caprese with a bit of leftover mozzarella from the fridge. That's all, we were full.

Yogurt on overnight.

Tuesday/8-Sep-20: Dinner was a halfish dose of Cardamom Chicken Stew in the Indian Style (BigFlav, p304). The original recipe wants 12 thighs for four people. That seems excessive; we usually do four for two. Very tasty. Might be better to remove the skin for cooking, since we don't usually eat skin cooked in this way. There was lots of liquid left, and I'll freeze a bit to use for something else. Served with plain basmati rice and some Zucchini in a Yogurt Dressing (SpiceKitch, p58), an old favorite. We're full, no dessert needed.

Wednesday/9-Sep-20: Late lunch made for a late dinner. :-( We had Crispy Scallops (web; online). (I got the recipe for the scallops, without the salad, from EAT-L. The salad isn't very appealing to me.) These were good. Served with grits and Zucchini Carpaccio with Avocado, Lemon Thyme, and Pistachio Oil (VegHarv, p214), which is a favorite nowadays. My lemon thyme died, so it was plain thyme, and I didn't have time to chop some pistachios (a nice crunch), but it was still good. Used my Dutch kaaschijfje to slice the zukes. That's all.

Thursday/10-Sep-20: Made a loaf of Oat Bread (BigGerman, p29) (Basic/Rapid/L/d/-). Very tasty. Hope it holds up over the next days better than the Oatmeal Sesame Bread did.

Dinner was pork ribs (a rare find at the grocery) à la Leo Koning (e.g.,a ton of salt,a half ton of cayenne; with a nod to Chef John I supplemented this with some garlic powder and black pepper. Cooked on low low low until they're done, several hours). A nice messy dinner once in a while, but the first time since we've moved, since finding unadulterated ribs is an unusual happening. Usually they're already marinatee, and perhaps cooked, Mexican or whatnot. Served with Clothilde Dusoulier's Perfect Roasted Potatoes (web). And Madhur Jaffrey's Zucchini and Feta Cheese Salad (WorldVeg, p640). We're stuffed.

Yogurt on overnight.

Friday/11-Sep-20: Dinner was a half recipe of Chickpea Dumplings in Curried Tomato Sauce (EW/oct19; web. I used a single can of tomato pulp (supposedly seedless), rather than the two tomato-y cans indicated. Pretty good stuff.

Saturday/12-Sep-20: Ed picked up an order from Intermarché Drive today.

Dinner was Baked Salmon with Herb Tahini (web). This was good, even though I see that I forgot the pine nuts in the herb topping. Served with Moroccan couscous and leftover zucchini-feta salad. Then a plate of sliced tomato from the potager, with S&P and olive oil and basil. Yum. Some cookies for after.

Sunday/13-Sep-20: Put the meat for Beef Tikka (RezaSpice, p100) on for its first marinade fairly early (for me). Went away for a while. Made the second marinade and added to the meat. Ed bbq'd this perfectly. Not the best written recipe, but really delicious. Served with (MJ's Simple Buttery Rice with Onions (out of my head) and Pan-Grilled Zucchini (MJ@Home, p173), an old favorite. Rather than using a frying pan, I sprayed the zucchini slices with oil and grilled them on the grill pan that came with the stove. All was good.

This week in the kitchen

Monday/20-Jan-20: Dinner was Scallops with Thai Scented Pea Puree (web), that's scallops with mushy peas flavored with Thai green curry paste. Why not? It wasn't bad, but 500g of peas for two people is an awful lot. My 300g of scallops were nine, cut in half. Served with trio rice. We had cake for snacks during the day, so we had some chocolates for after.

Tuesday/21-Jan-20: Ed off to the doctor this evening. Returned from the pharmacy to find Korean Sweet Potato Noodles (Japchae) (web) for his dinner, along with Madhur Jaffrey's Cabbage Kimchee that I started last week. Pretty good stuff. The kimchee would have been better with chineeskool, but it wasn't bad. I only used half of the noodles James sent, so I'll make this again in a few week. More cake for dessert.

Yogurt on overnight.

Wednesday/22-Jan-20: We had dental checkups today in La Rochefoucauld, so we shopped after.

Dinner was Easy Comforting Fish Stew (web); a half recipe served two, but not generously. It was good. Used cod since that was on sale this week. Then we had some St Nectaire that I bought last week and was on its use-by date. Then some of the still-yummy cake for dessert.

Thursday/23-Jan-20: Oscar off to the vet for his shots this afternoon.

Dinner was a half dose of Cuisses de Volaille à la Diable—Deviled Chicken Legs (Franey, p36). I used two thighs per person rather than a whole leg. Delicious these were. The suggested side dish was Asperges Sautées aux Graines de Sésame—Sautéed Asparagus with Sesame Seeds (Franey, p37). It not being asparagus season and me having some snijbonen in the fridge needed to be used, I steamed those, then drained and turned back into the pan with a tiny bit of low-salt soya sauce and some sesame seeds. This is a good way to do any veg, I expect. We also had, sort of, Pommes de Terre au Paprika—Paprika Potatoes (Franey, p93), but with smoked paprika rather than plain. All was good. We finished the cake for dessert. Tastily stuffed we are.

Friday/24-Jan-20: Dinner was Tortellini in Creamy Courgette Sauce (MC); I used the pepper Boursin instead of tuinkruiden kaas. The tortellini were potimorron and onion; I thought these were too sweet. Anyhow, fairly good. Then a big salad. Then some gateaux basques from the boulanger.

Saturday/25-Jan-20: Dinner was a half dose of Angry Pork Tenderloin, a recipe I collected in 1994 from EAT-L; the recipe purports to be from the Feb/93 issue of Chile Pepper Magazine, but that magazine seems to be defunk. (I used to subscribe, and still use a mug that I got as a gift.) This was pretty good. I used only a third of the olive oil asked, since there seemed already to be more than enough sauce for the marinade. It was good, but a trifle sweet. For sides we had All-Purpose Rice and Beans (BigFlav, p262), with Mama's Garlic Coleslaw (MC, HandyBook), and hominy from the freezer. Ed suggested that hominy could be used in place of the rice for  the rice-and-bean recipe, and I've made a note. We finished off the sale chocolates for after.

Yogurt on overnight.

Sunday/26-Jan-20: Dinner was Tarte Épinard Pignons (VPG). I used Cyril Lignac's variation with burrata instead of mozzarella and cashews instead of pine nuts. This was pretty good, although the pastry (store-bought pâte feuilletée), was over-browned when the custard was nicely done. Then a grated carrot salad. Then a pair of chocolate-covered madeleines each.

This week in the kitchen

Monday/18-Nov-19: Used up odd bits of stuff from the freezer to make Poor-Cousin Paella (Secrets, p249). Make a whole dose and we've got half in the freezer for another time. Some squares of chocolate for after.

Tuesday/19-Nov-19: Off plan today. Found a recipe to use up odd bits in the fridge and we had a halfish recipe of Broccoli, Mushroom, Spinach and Cheese Pasta (web). Pretty good. We have a bit left, so the half recipe would probably have served three, rather than the four suggested by the recipe. I forgot to notice the breadcrumbs on top, but remember thinking as I put it in the oven that breadcrumbs might be nice. Oh well.

Wednesday/20-Nov-19: Tonight the two of us ate a half dose of Shrimp, Saffron and Preserved Lemon Mac and Cheese (web). (The half dose should have served 3.) I choose this because it sounded rather improbable. And it was. Okay to eat but don't need to do it again. Followed by a simple salad. Then a pair of chocolate-covered madeleines each.

Yogurt on overnight.

Thursday/21-Nov-19: Shopping today.

Dinner was a half recipe of Fish Steamed over Vegetables and Fresh Herbs (Essential, p434). This was okay, but nothing special. Served with Potato "Tostones" (Flattened Potatoes) (Essential, p301), as suggested. These were good (especially good because I used duck fat rendered from the magret we had recently), but tedious to make. For dessert, I bought some gateau de fromage. Delicious but filling.

Friday/22-Nov-19: In the morning, I made a half batch of Bold Teriyaki Sauce (web). Part will go into the crockpot that I'll start tonight for tomorrow' meal; the rest will go into some stir-fried Chinese-ish veggies soon.

Dinner was Tuscan beans from the freezer, topped up with canned tuna, lemon juice, and a bit of olive oil. Served that with some lettuce topped with the rest of yesterday's veggies dolled up with a bit of vinaigrette.

After dinner, I froze up gaboons of chicken stock, mostly in 1-liter jars since there weren't many smaller ones available.

And started a crockpotful (a half recipe since I have only a 3-quart crockpot) of Slow Cooker Thai Pulled Pork (web). My pork had no bones. This has to cook 10 hours, so should be ready. After that the meat has to be shredded and the sauce fiished with peanut butter (not "natural" it says — why? that's all we have in the house, so that's what it will be) and lime zest and juice. Smells good already.

Saturday/23-Nov-19: Served the Thai pulled pork with white rice and steamed broccoli as they showed on the site. Yummy stuff. Another meal in the freezer.

Sunday/24-Nov-19: Dinner was kip filets with a yummy basting sauce from the freezer. Cooked four kip filets; the other two will be used in the next couple of weeks. Served with a half dose of Parsley Salad with Bulgur, Mint, and Tomatoes (BigFlav, p216). This was good, made with lime juice instead of lemon, because there was some in the fridge leftover.

Yogurt on overnight.

This week in the kitchen

Monday/12-Aug-19: Dinner was Shrimp Dopiaza (30MinInd, p73), shrimp in a tasty onion sauce. Served with Jeera Rice (30MinInd, p99), which as good as it has been before, and Spinach with Besan (30MinInd, p79), which was barely edible. Not sure why, all the ingredients seemed ok, but the result was bitter. And the besan-water mix turned to a pancake almost immediately. I added more water and tried to thin it down, but that only worked a bit. We had kind of mini-dumplings of besan. Good thing besan is tasty. More Toulouse chocolate for dessert.

Tuesday/13-Aug-19: Lunch out with Cath today. Nothing happened in the kitchen.

Wednesday/14-Aug-19: Yogurt on overday.

Dinner out with Patrice and Wim. Nothing much happened in the kitchen.

Thursday/15-Aug-19: Our charming neighbor threw the three hanging baskets of begonias over the fence into the back yard last night. This upset our day, and we didn't feel like going to the fête this evening. I didn't feel like eating at all. Ed had just a bite.

Friday/16-Aug-19: Shopping today.

Our dinner was Barbecued Salmon (web). Oops, I forgot I'm out of hoisin sauce (already on the list for Grand Frais), so had to improvise that with some spicy plum chutney and a bit of prune juice. Wasn't too bad as substitutes go. Served with a pilaf with dried, reconstituted cèpes. Followed by a simple salad with Buttermilk-Thyme Dressing (VegHarv, p298).

Saturday/17-Aug-19: Patrice and Wim for dinner today. For our apéro, there were some mini bell peppers filled with a mixture of cream cheese, feta, garlic, chives, and parsley. For our main, we had Spice-Crusted Pork Tenderloins with Banana-Date Chutney (License, p150). I had three pork tenderloins; Ed couldn't keep the fire going long enough to finish cooking the biggest one, so that's in the freezer now. And because there was no fire, I had to grills the eggplant slices under the broiler. Spread these with a bit of chili-garlic sauce for the last minutes of broiling. And there was All-Purpose Rice-and-Beans (BigFlav, p262), which is really yummy. P&W brought toetjes for dessert. I'd made the broth for Buttermilk Ice Cream; we'll have that tomorrow.

Sunday/18-Aug-19: Yogurt on overday.

Major rethink of the meal plan today, to account for leftovers and poblanos.

Tonight we had the leftover beans and rice. With two of the poblanos, I made kind of a Roasted Poblano Lime Crema, loosely based on web and web. Think it was a bit strong on the lime, but still it was good with the rice&beans. Also some Banana-Date Chutney. Later I froze up the Buttermilk Ice Cream (MC), which was good.

Didn't get anything from my cookbook-of-the-month made this week. Today's plan will go to next week. Thinking I'll skip this for next month. I have a book chosen, but don't feel like bothering with it.

This week in the kitchen

Monday/10-Jun-19: Dinner was Turkey Pitas (web; CL/jul14). I had what was probably half the meat, but used all the spices and accompanying tahini-yogurt sauce. We used four pitas to make the sandwiches, instead of one each. I bought some mini-romaines, I think for the accompanying salad, but forgot to make it.

Tuesday/11-Jun-19: Peg&Jim arrived late this afternoon, so we had a late dinner after apéros and munchies. There was Exotic-Flavored Chicken Thighs with Tomato-Mint Salad (License, p205; cookbooker). Barbecuing the chicken had to be delayed a bit since they weren't quite defrosted after two days in the fridge. The chicken is spiced only with ground cardamon, salt, and black pepper. Delicious. Accompanied this by Carrot and Pistachio Salad (web), which we all liked. I forgot to make rice to accompany this, so we sliced some bread for the soppy.

Dessert was A Peach Shortcake for Lizzie (BigFlav, p430), which was excellent. I used cream & mascarpone for the cream.

Wednesday/12-Jun-19: Another late meal. For a starter we had Smoked Salmon Salad with Dill (BEFCC, p35), which is an old favorite. Then there was Chicken Saltimbocca (ClayCook2, p63), which was pretty good, along with a side of whole wheat spaghetti. For dessert there was the rest of the peach shortcake with mascarpone whipped cream. All good.

Thursday/13-Jun-19: Shopping today. Peg&Jim are leaving Saturday :-( and I have no meal plan beyond that. Just bought a bunch of veggies and we'll see what turns up.

We started tonight with Spicy Cucumber Wedges (MJ1, p172), a pretty standard dish now. Our main was Salmon Poached with Spinach and Bengali Five-Spice Mixture (SpiceKitch, p76), served basmati rice. Yummy stuff. For dessert there was lazy-cook's kheer, riz au lait doctored with chopped pistachios and cardamom.

Friday/14-Jun-19: Lunch out today, and a visit to Aubeterre. Cheese and other nibbles in the evening.

Saturday/15-Jun-19: Peg&Jim left today. We had pasta and broccoli with a roquefort-cream cheese sauce. And ice cream for dessert

Sunday/16-Jun-19: A bit salad for dinner and chocolate covered madeleines for dessert.

This week in the kitchen

Monday/25-Feb-19: Dinner was a halfish recipe of Chicken Kebabs with Ras el Hanout (web); should have 400g of skinless, boneless chicken thighs, but I freeze them up in 250g lots, so that's what we had. This was quite good; expect you could also grill chicken thighs, maybe marinating a bit longer. And a halfish recipe of Grated Cucumber Salad with Oregano (Morocco, p73), which we've liked before. And some Moroccan couscous made with chicken stock. Chocolate-covered madeleines for dessert.

Yogurt on overnight.

Tuesday/26-Feb-19: Seemed to have survived my little surgery today (placing two extra-long T-tubes) in my ears.

Ed sort of fixed dinner, carrot sticks and pasta sauce from the freezer over pasta. And chocolate-covered madeleines for dessert.

Wednesday/27-Feb-19: We met Rusty today, then did our shopping.

Dinner was was a halfish recipe of Green Tea Salmon, a recipe from a box of Celestial Seasonings tea. It was good. Served with plain rice and Grilled Romaine with Feta and Nuoc Cham (web; CL/apr18). Finished the Langres cheese for afters.

Thursday/28-Feb-19: House-cleaning.

Dinner was about a 2/3 recipe of Paprika Veal Stew with Dumplings (Stews, p41; cookbooker). I used some chicken to make up the amount of liquid, not wanting to open another can of tomatoes. I just see that I forgot to add the sour cream at the end. Oh well. Then a salad. Then some mini ice cream bars.

Friday/1-Mar-19: House-cleaning again.

Dinner was 20 Minute Garlic Beef and Broccoli Lo Mein (web). Pretty good stuff. Might have been nice to marinate the beef in the sauce. Then some torsade (I think) that Ed brought from the boulangerie.

Saturday/2-Mar-19: Used up the rest of the butternut squash for Risotto with Winter Squash (VegPress, p157). Pretty easy and pretty tasty. Used up some chicken stock for most of the liquid. Then a salad. Then some little ice creams from the freezer.

Sunday/3-Mar-19: Chris and Amy arrived today.

For a starter there was Amilcar's Grilled Shrimp and Avocado Salad (BigFlav, p226). This was delicious. For a main, there was Roast Pork Tenderloin with Orange-Red Onion Salsa (BigFlav, p153). The roast pork took quite a while to get done, but it, and the salsa were great. Served with All-Purpose Rice and Beans (BigFlav, p262), a tasty and easy recipe. The shrimp salad was recommended as a starter and the beans were recommended as a go-with. For afters we worked on a plateau of cheese, Brie, Tomme de Savoie, and Fourme d'Ambert.

This week in the kitchen

Monday/24-Sep-18: For dinner there was Pasta Sauce with Peas, Ham, and Cream (p164 , MarCuc). The sauce is simple, but good. Hazan says the original pasta for this sauce is garganelli, a hand-made pasta. I found the instructions for this in (p110, Geometry). A weaver's comb, which is probably where we get Afro picks, is traditionally used to make the grooves on the rolled squares of pasta. Can't say I have any skill at this, but I do have an Afro pick now.

The sauce was good, but the pasta was a bit heavy, maybe because I only rolled to 5 rather than 6.

Then we had the rest of yesterday's salad mixed with the rest of yesterday's beans, all of which make a nice salad. No dessert since we were full.

Tuesday/25-Sep-18: We're still having problems with a mouse in the pantry. Chocolate chips and pasta are its current favorites. Three live traps are set with no results so far.

Recombobbled the meal plan today after we learned yesterday that Cath's friend is coming a week later than expected. Made the list too.

Used some very ripe bananas and some from the freezer to make up a loaf of Best Banana Bread (HandyBook).

Didn't have the oomph to make what was on the plan; really too tired to deal with peeling a winter squash. Instead made Vegan Eggplant and Tomato Gratin (VegSups, p24), which I made non-vegan by dolloping on the rest of some fresh goat cheese that needed to be used up. Pretty good. Followed by a salad. And some quite-tasty banana bread.

Wednesday/26-Sep-18: Shopping today.

Dinner was Grilled Salmon with Chile-Honey Glaze and Ginger-Red Onion Relish (BigFlav, p87). Ed bbq'd the fish. The glaze is good, but the relish is super-yummy. As suggested, served with New Potato Hash Browns with Caramelized Onions (BigFlav, p236). These were good, but I thought the onions were too sweet. We also had Fried Eggplant with Feta and Basil (O&C, p276), which Ed didn't like as well as the last time I made this. We were full, but managed a pair of chocolate-topped madeleines for after.

Yogurt on overnight.

Thursday/27-Sep-18: Lunch out with Sue and Andy.

Made up broth for Mango Ice Cream (ThaiCC, p91) using canned mango, since the fresh ones were hard at the store this week and there were no frozen ones.

Friday/28-Sep-18: For dinner, Ed bbq'd a half dose of Grilled Sirloin and Apricot Skewers with Pomegranate Vinaigrette (License, p126). Since apricots are way out of season, I used peaches instead as suggested. Good this was. As suggested, served with Grilled Potatoes with Yogurt-Parsley Sauce (License, p283), which Ed liked a lot. Also a half recipe of Zucchini and Feta Cheese Salad (WorldVeg, p640). And then there was Mango Ice Cream, which was pretty good.

Yogurt on overnight.

Saturday/29-Sep-18: We ate half of an Onion and Rosemary Tart with Fromage Blanc (VegSups, p9; cookbooker). Then a big salad. Then some mini ice cream bars.

Sunday/30-Sep-18: Ed was wanting pork chops. So tonight he barbecued a pair, rubbed with a Cajun spice run. Served with Moroccan Green Pepper Salad—Felfla Mechouia (WorldVeg, p634; cookbooker), a delicious salad, roasted green bell peppers with a bit of preserved lemon. And Oven Fried Potatoes with Oregano and Lemon (O&C, p280). We finished off a nice bottle of Fronton Flingueurs negrette, along with some slightly aged Morbiers. Then a spoonful of Mango Ice Cream each. And later a pair of chocolate-covered madeleines each.

This week in the kitchen

Monday/3-Sep-18: A been-there-done-that dinner, but still good. There was Spice-Rubbed Grilled Chicken Breasts with Sweet and Hot Peach Relish (BigFlav, p178). Even though I made half the rub, I still have put some in the freezer for another bbq. And Roast Beet and Carrot Salad with Lemon-Mint Dressing (BigFlav, p204), which I made for the third time, about 12 years apart each time. And Parsley Salad with Bulgur, Mint, and Tomatoes (BigFlav, p216), which I've made several times lately, and years before previously. All good.

Tuesday/4-Sep-18: Dinner was a halfish recipe of Grilled Shrimp Skewers over White Bean Salad (web). Nice, summery meal. Small ice creams for dessert.

Still haven't figured out what cookbook to use for this month.

Wednesday/5-Sep-18: Shopping today.

Decided that my newest Deborah Madison cookbook, Vegetarian Suppers, will be this month's cookbook. An easy choice, but I already had one of those recipes on the plan for this week. Have marked lots of things to make, so it should work out.

I baked the rest of the Beet and Feta Samosas, straight from the freezer, for our starter. Since I again had a half of a red bell pepper to be used up, I made another batch of Fresh Red Chutney with Almonds (Q&E, p114). Our main was Yoghurt Fish (MJFlavs, p152) which was disappointing. Rather blah in spite of all the spices that went in. Served with plain basmati rice and Gujerati-Style Green Beans (MJ1, p102), made with snijbonen. We each had a nectavigne for dessert. What's that? A kind of nectarine with dark flesh and skin. Unusual taste, but good.

Thursday/6-Sep-18: For a starter, there were some figs with goat cheese and a drizzle of honey and some chopped walnuts, all in the oven for a bit at 400F. For a main there was a half recipe of Summer Potatoes Stews with Eggplant, Peppers, and Olives (VegSups, p172). I spiffied this up with some piment d'Espelette and smoked paprika. Served over brown rice, which was really too much. I suspect this might serve six since we didn't manage to finish the half recipe. Good stuff, though. I had a peach for dessert.

Friday/7-Sep-18: Munchies for dinner at The Tempest. I did make up some things like the cherry tartlets that I made a week or so ago, but folded them up like samosas. Oops, the cheese melted out, so we scooped into little tupperwares and called it cherry-mascarpone crunch. The taste was fine. Otherwise nothing happened in the kitchen.

Saturday/8-Sep-18: Dinner out tonight. Nothing happened in the kitchen except ...

Yogurt on overnight.

Sunday/9-Sep-18: Oops, I defrosted the wrong kind of kip thighs for dinner, bone-in instead of bone-out. Replan.

Deseeded a mess of tomatoes from the garden to make up into tomato purée. Much work, only 1-1/2 cups in the end.

Dinner was Jamaican Jerk Chicken (Ainsley2, p74). This was easy and delicious. Served with polenta, corn on the cob (who plans a meal with two corn dishes?), and a made-up cucumber and red onion salad. All good. Served with one of our vacation wines, Les Frontons Flingeurs, which went well with the spicy chicken. Ice cream (bar and cup) for dessert. I'm stuffed.

This week in the kitchen

Monday/27-Aug-18: Late start for a Monday.

Dinner was Fragrant Sea Scallop Cakes (web). These, and the sauce, were very tasty. (And I've ordered the book whence the recipe came, David Tanis' One Good Dish.) For a veggie salad, I made (more or less) Spicy Thai-Style Zucchini Carrot Salad (web); this was very nice. And there was trio rice. All was tasty. We each had a mini ice cream bar for dessert.

Tuesday/28-Aug-18: Changed dinner plans to have an easier meal. I made Chickpea & Chorizo Fideos (web; cookbooker). Oops, no whole wheat spaghetti, I used gramigne instead. (This has become a favorite pasta for dishes like this, or as a side.) Used extra fort chorizo, making the sauce a big spicy; a bit of red pepper flakes might have been even nicer. The whole recipe might have served three; four would be skimpy servings. Then a salad. Then a pair of chocolate-covered madeleines each.

Wednesday/29-Aug-18: Yogurt on overday, because I didn't want to start it during the electrical storm when we might lose power. Doesn't seem like we did, but there was no internet or phone when I got up. Shopping today.

Dinner was Four-Spice Salmon (web). This was easy and really good. The spices (coriander, cloves, cumin, and nutmeg) are mixed and spread over the fish, which is cooked simply, spice-side-down and then spice-side-up. Lots of combinations of tastes could be used, I think. Served with eggplant slices sprayed with oil, rubbed with store-bought garam masala, and grilled on the stove's pan, topped with a yogurt-garlic sauce. And some trio rice. More madeleines for dessert.

Thursday/30-Aug-18: Busy in the kitchen prepping for tomorrow's meal.
  • Made up some ground roasted cumin. I was out and need it for tomorrow. (Don't really use a recipe: toast it and grind it, that's all there is to it.)
  • Made up a one quarter recipe of Chaat Masala (MJFlavs, p263).
  • Made up a one third recipe of Punjabi Garam Masala (MJFlavs, p270).
  • Made up the stuffing for Beet and Feta Samosas (MadeIndia, p48). These will be made up with filo for easiness. Thought these sounded healthy and odd, but recipes from this book have generally been successful. We'll see.
  • Put lamb cubes on to marinate for Lamb Kebabs (MJFlavs, p226).
Didn't get everything done I'd like, so will have to cut back for tomorrow. Oh well, enough is enough.

Dinner was a smash-up from the freezer. I defrosted some Coconut and Pumpkin Soup, added a bit of chicken stock from the fridge, some chopped acorn squash (from the potager), and some cooked shrimp (from the freezer). Pretty good it was. Made up a salad with the couscous left from Sunday. Some ice cream bits (a cup for me, a bar for Ed) for dessert.

Yogurt on overnight.

While I'm sitting here typing, Ive seen a little mouse come out from behind the wood burner. Ed moved the live trap there, and she took the bait without tripping it. He rebaited it. Cats are here, but worthless.

Friday/31-Aug-18: Hit the floor cooking today. Well, sort of ...
  • Shelled and peeled pistachios for the dessert.
  • Made Onion Relish (MJ1, p174)), an old favorite.
  • Made Carrot and Onion Salad (MJ1, p171), an old favorite.
  • Last minute decision to make two chutneys for starter.
  • And other stuff.
Mike and Sally came to share a yummy Indian dinner.
  • For apéro, with the pineau we bought at the Massignac marché des producteurs:
    • Spicy Cucumber Wedges (MJ1, p172)
  • For starters:
    • Beet and Feta Samosas (MadeIndia, p48; cookbooker)
    • Fresh Green Chutney (Q&E, p113) and Fresh Red Chutney with Almonds (Q&E, p114)
    • Carrot and Onion Salad (MJ1, p171)
  • For main:
    • Lamb Kebab (MJFlavs, p226)
    • Cachumber—Tomato, Onion and Green Coriander Relish (MJ1, p172)
    • Khili Hui Khichri—Rice with Yellow Split Peas (MJ1, p150)
    • Relish tray with home-made Lime Pickle, home-made Tamarind-Date Chutney, store-bought mango chutney
  • For dessert:
    • Kaye's Lazy Kheer, store-bought rice puddings, spiffed up with ground cardamom and chopped pistachios.
Everything was extra yummy, even if it's the cook saying so. The beet samosas were surprising good. I had forgotten about the red chutney and happened to have half a red bell pepper needing something to do; it's really good, so I need not to forget it again. The rice with yellow peas was a first, but not a last. The lamb kebabs were delicious, the meat very tender from marinating in yogurt.

Saturday/1-Sep-18: For lunch we ate last night's leftovers. For dinner, there were Grilled Eggplant and Pepper Sandwiches with Basil and Black Olive Spread (BigFlav, p267). Shh, don't tell, the Black Olive Spread is tapenade. This was good, a bit similar to one I did last week. Liked that sauce better than the tapenade effect I think. Still, the whole idea is good.

Still haven't decided on a cookbook for September. Will postpone Mexican books until later the the year, giving me a chance to stock up on necessaries. September and October are difficult, though. Waiting for inspiration.

Sunday/2-Sep-18: For dinner there was Grilled Poussin with Grilled Leeks, Garlic, and Rosemary (Thrill, p196). I used coquelets instead of poussins, which I think means they were young males rather than young females. Still good. The leeks were a nice idea, but should have been bigger ones I think, and I should have left the root end attached so they held together better. Served with Grilled Sweet Potatoes with Molasses Glaze (Thrill, p304) as suggested. These were good, if a bit of trouble.

Yogurt on overnight.

This week in the kitchen

Monday/20-Aug-18: Back to the barbecue tonight. Dinner was a half recipe of Rosemary-Grilled New York Strip with Smokey Eggplant Relish (License, p135). The rub was delish. The bbq chef hasn't mastered steaks to order; mine was on the far side of medium, while his was barely medium. Too bad, since the setting was so good. The eggplant relish is similar to one I made last week, where you grill the eggplant, then chop them up and mix them with a dressing, this one based on balsamic. The extra dressing on the plate was good with the steak. Served with Roasted Peri Peri Potatoes (web). I made a halfish recipe, which fit tidily in the toaster oven. Definitely a keeper recipe. Ice cream for dessert—a mini Häagen-Dasz cup for me, a mini Magnum for Ed.

Yogurt on overnight.

Tuesday/21-Aug-18: Late morning today. The hornet man came while I was still outside eating breakfast. (Ed wasn't up yet.) The day proceeded slowly and dinner got very late. But it's a keeper.

We had a halfish recipe of Creamy Sun-Dried Tomato Fettuccine (web). I had intended to make pasta, but didn't really feel like it, so used fresh pasta from the freezer. The sun-dried tomatoes were my oven-dried ones from the freezer. Good it was. Followed by a salad. And some chocoloate covered madeleins.

Wednesday/22-Aug-18: A day for using up the bounty of the potager and the fridge. We had Spicy Eggplant and Broccoli in Ginger Sauce (MaiPham, p164). I've made this before with just broccoli; this time it was also with the little white eggplants from the potager. Also used up a red bell pepper from the fridge. We thought it was only so-so this time. Over rice, of course. For dessert, there was Gâteau Renversé aux Mirabelles Caramélisées (web), aka Mirabelle Upside-Down Cake, made in my 9" cast iron skillet. Tasty it was, although it didn't want to turn out of the pan. I used only 75g of sucre de canne (instead of 100g). Put this on the bottom of the pan, and added a sachet of sucre de vanille to the batter. Served with crème fraîche as suggested.

Thursday/23-Aug-18: Dinner at a marché des producteurs, in St Auvent, with Cath, Hannah, and Jem. Nothing further happened in the kitchen.

Friday/24-Aug-18: Started Mirabelle Jam (MesConf, p96) with plums that Cath brought us. They may or may not be mirabelles.

Dinner was Panfried Cod with Tomato-Mint Yogurt Sauce (BigFlav, p96). I used lieu noir for the fish. Dredged in cornmeal and fried, the fish was nothing special, but the sauce was extra yummy. As suggested, served with Uncommon Carrot Salad (BigFlav, p212) and Parsley Salad with Bulgur, Mint, and Tomatoes (BigFlav, p216). The carrot salad was good, but didn't especially go with the meal. I've made the other salad before; didn't use nearly as much parsley as asked, so it was more a bulgur salad with lots of goodies. Since the fish sauce had lots of tomato, I didn't add any to this. It was good, and went well with the fish's sauce. Some chocolate-covered madeleines for dessert.

Saturday/25-Aug-18: Tonight we had Chuletas: Thin Grilled Pork Chops with Simple Tomato Relish (License, p147). The pork chops were good. The tomato relish was good, but yesterday's was better. Served with All-Purpose Rice and Beans (BigFlav, p262), with red beans instead of black. That's a super recipe and could be eaten as a veggie main, maybe with long-grain brown rice. For dessert we had ice cream cones at the cinema.

Finished off the Mirabelle Jam. It made 2-1/2 AH jars.

Yogurt on overnight.

Have been enjoying cooking from Schlesinger and Willoughby this month. Ed has suggested Mexican for next month. Problem is, I haven't found a good source for tortillas. I'm willing to make them a couple of times, but still I wonder how much Mexican I can make without them? Still, would be

Sunday/26-Aug-18: Cath stayed for a barbecue dinner after we visited the Marché des Potiers in Montbron. When we returned we stopped for some pineau and stuffed grape leaves. For a starter we had little terrines lined with smoked salmon, filled with a blend of avocado, cream cheese, lime juice, shallot, dill, and cilantro; I made these up before we left for the marché. The main was Chicken Skewers with Cucumber-Garlic Yogurt Sauce (web). The chicken was tasty but seemed a bit dry. The cucumber-garlic sauce was good, although I used only about a quarter of the yogurt asked. For dessert Ed grilled some peaches and I made some crème fraîche ice cream as a go-with. We ate well.

This week in the kitchen

Monday/13-Aug-18: Dinner was Sweet and Spicy Lo Mein Noodles (BigFlav, p274). I made a whole recipe, which serves four; the two of us ate about two thirds of it. I was worried about using the raw veggies, but they provided a pleasant crunch with the noodles. It's puzzling to me why the recipe has you make so much sauce and then uses only one cup. I made a half recipe of the recommended Sweet and Hot Sesame-Spinach Condiment (BigFlav, p362). This was an interesting idea, but way too salty, even though the soy sauce was low-salt. I used the max amount of Tabasco and neither thought it that hot. We were full.

Tuesday/14-Aug-18: Yogurt on overday.

We had lunch near Ed's archery lesson. Nothing further happened in the kitchen.

Wednesday/15-Aug-18: Somebody (who, me?) forgot that this was a holiday, so there was a quick rearrangement on the meal plan.

For dinner we had Grilled Open-Faced Eggplant Sandwiches with Black Olive Relish and Fresh Mozzarella (License, p39). I made a whole recipe; we are well-filled, but the two of us ate almost all of it. I thought the black olive relish might be too strong, but it all went together well. A pair of chocolate-covered madeleines each for dessert.

Thursday/16-Aug-18: Shopping today.

For dinner there was a halfish recipe of Creamy Salmon Spaghetti (Ainsley2, p54). This was interesting because the fish isn't really cooked, as a thing by itself. Cream, garlic, and tomato paste a brought to a boil, then the heat is turned off and the first is added. Worked amazingly well. This is added to just-cooked spaghetti (I used whole wheat) with some grated Parmesan for serving. Good enough, but nothing special. We had our starter after, insalata caprese with home-grown tomatoes,  two tiny Beefsteaks, no especially tasty. Then a salad. For dessert, I made some cherry tart things, very loosely based on this recipe. I made four to use up half the left-over filo I had. Very nice they were. I used ground almonds between the layers of filo. Added some almond extract to the mascarpone mixture as shown in this recipe, but that wasn't needed at all. Use nine (frozen) cherries per tart, rather than the skimpy three in the recipe. Good stuff, although a bit hard to eat.

I see that I've really not been keeping the lists of cookbooks I'm reading and recently read up-to-date. Started VegSups today. It looks really promising.

Friday/17-Aug-18: For our meal, I made a half recipe of Tuna and Chickpea Salad with Pesto (web), served on a bed of lettuce. This was good, almost very good. Needed some zing, tabasco or some red pepper flakes perhaps; maybe some feta too. For afters, I had an ice cream cup and Ed had a mini Magnum.

Yogurt on overnight.

Saturday/18-Aug-18: Nice dinner with Laura and Ralph tonight. Took a bottle of Château Larou Les Complices.

Nothing much happened in the kitchen.

Sunday/19-Aug-18: Early meal before a play in the early evening. We had Crab Salad with Fennel (PatSalads, p90), which was good, but not a keeper.

This week in the kitchen

Monday/30-Jul-18: Dinner was a half recipe of Creamy Prawn Curry (200Budget, p188). This was good, easy, and fast. Might have had too much shrimp, though. A half recipe calls for 300g cooked shrimp. I usually use half of this for the two of us, so we had a lot of shrimp. I made, more or less, the Spiced Coconut Rice that was a suggested accompaniment. I didn't have chopped creamed coconut; I just used the rest of the pack of coconut milk that I used for the curry, topped up with water. Then I made (sort of) Southeast Asia Broccoli from FoodNetwork. They won't show recipes from the .com site in Europe now, so I had to look at a cached version. This was good, but a bit salty from the fish sauce. It was good mixed with the curry and rice. For dessert, we finished the tapioca pudding.

Tuesday/31-Jul-18: I had the idea to sneak in some home-made pasta today. Cleaned off the counter and got out the recipe I intended to use, only to discover that I'd forgotten that it wanted a serious amount of parlsey and I didn't buy any last week. Easily discouraged, I used frozen tagliatelle to make a half recipe of Tagliatelle con Salsa di Noci—Tagliatelle with Walnuts and Marscapone (Top100Pasta, p12). Having no mascarpone in the fridge or freezer, I used cream cheese, which was the suggested alternative. This was quite good although it would have liked a little bit of the pasta water to loosen the sauce up a bit. Before the main, we each had an artichoke bottom with green tapenade and half a crottin de Chavignol, with the cheese melted under the grill. Following the pasta, there was a big salad of roquette/arugula. Then we each had a Rustic Cherry Tart (web), more or less. I had frozen cherries that needed to be used, as well as some squares of pâte feuilletée, which I used instead of making pastry myself. Pretty good this was. Ed has his with cream.

I didn't get the list made today, so it looks like we'll shop on Thursday instead of tomorrow. Start of new month means new cookbook-of-the-month, which takes some research that I hadn't done in preparation. Oh well.

Yogurt on overnight.

Wednesday/1-Aug-18: Finished the list today, whew.

Oops, didn't remember that the lentils for tonight's dinner needed to be soaked for 3-4 hours. So I precooked those a bit to make a quarter recipe of Palestinian Rice with Lentils and Browned Onions (WorldVeg, p404). Served with a half recipe of Pumpkin or Hubbard Squash Cooked with Bengali Seasonings (WorldVeg, p289). Used a good chunk of our first winter squash from the potager. (These were supposed to be acorn squash but clearly aren't. Picked two more this evening. Tomorrow we'll pick the first of the other sort of winter squash we have. Both these are burying the zucchini.) Unfortunately my mustard oil was a bit rancid so the dish had an unpleasant taste. Served with Sliced Tomatoes in a Tomato Sauce (WorldVeg, p303). This was good, but I overlooked the instruction about cutting the tomatoes into only three slices. It would have been better that way I expect. Little ice creams for dessert.

Thursday/2-Aug-18: Shopping today.

Our meal was Seared Salmon with Pesto Fettuccine for Two (web). This was possible because I found some refrigerated pesto, which turned out to be pretty good, at Grand Frais on my last visit. I'll freeze the rest of this up in small portions tomorrow. Couldn't find whole wheat fettuccine, so I used whole wheat spaghetti already in house. Ed barbecued the salmon, along with slices from the rest of yesterday's squash. This was pretty bland really, but worked ok. He thought thicker slices worked better than thin. For starters we had artichoke bottom with green tapenade and goat cheese, grilled. For dessert there was store-bought riz au lait with red currants.

Friday/3-Aug-18: Dinner was a halfish recipe of Le Filet de Poulet à la Crème Fraîche Chavroux. (This is from a new Chavroux product; I've not found an online source for the recipe.) First oddness, the recipe calls for filets de poulets, which are generally kip filets or skinless, boneless chicken breast halfs; but the photo shows what looks like a skin-on kip filet, with a bit of wing bone sticking out. Never seen a chicken breast like that for sale. I used kip filets. They are cooked in a 180C oven 10min on one side, 2min on the second; this worked fine, to my surprise. The sauce wanted 1.5 soupspoonsful of the crème fraîche. That wasn't nearly enough to deal with 150g of sliced mushrooms (mine were shiitakes). I topped it up as needed. Made some sautéed potatoes with the rest of the potatoes on hand. Reheated the peas and corn. Mini ice cream bars for dessert. We're full.

An interesting thing about the chicken dish is that the kip filets were cooked in the oven, 375F, 10min on the first side, 2min on the second. The kip filets were fairly flat, and fit into the largest dish that will fit in my little, old toaster oven. Interesting, rather low-fat, way to cook them.

Yogurt on overnight.

Saturday/4-Aug-18: Using up one zucchini and a roasted beet, our starter was (more or less), Zucchini Beet Salad (web). I made a halfish recipe, one beet and one zuke (cut on mandolin rather than spiralized). This was good, but the half recipe was really too much as a starter for the two of us, and not quite enough for a main. Odd portions, but yummy.

Our main was Grilled Pork Skewers with Green Mango (Thrill, p158). The recipe serves four supposedly. A half recipe would have served three, but we managed to eat it all. Very tasty. Served with All-Purpose Rice and Beans (BigFlav, p262). Even though I used borlotti beans (have no canned black beans in the stash), this was still yummy. Stuffed we were. We drank a bottle of Brin (a Fronton, 100% negrette), which I liked better than Ed. Just wanting the taste, I finished with two tiny slices of Chaource which was on sale last week.

Sunday/5-Aug-18: The menu planner  needs a good talking to. A stir-fried Chinese meal on a super-hot day probably wasn't the best choice. But it used up some of the pineapple juice malingering in the fridge. And it was super-delicious.

We had World's Greatest Lemon Chicken (Chinatown, p73; cookbooker). I been told this truly was the best lemon chicken, and I think that was right. Really tasty. Served with plain rice and Hot and Spicy Wrinkled Beans (Chinatown, p106). I've made the green beans a number of times. It was still good.

Made some Butterscotch Tapioca Pudding (MC) in the morning. This one was only the French tapioca. Worked fine. Yay!

This week in the kitchen

Monday/13-Jul-15: Dinner was a half recipe of Shrimp Fried Rice (web). I used two eggs for the two of us and made a sort of flat omelet, rather than scrambling, and sliced into strips. Added some red pepper flakes with the ginger. Used skinny haricots verts rather than show peas. I used trio rice that I froze a while ago; this worked fine. Used frozen cooked shrimp and added them near the end with the egg bits. It was good. Then some juice popsicles.

Tuesday/14-Jul-15: Used up lots of odd bits from the freezer tonight for a halfish recipe of Poor-Cousin Paella (p249, Seaver), cooked chicken, the last bit of some defrosted chicken stock, cooked chicken, chorizo, one squid body. Added a (small) jar of artichoke bottoms and a tomato, for the first time ever. About a teaspoon of chipotle powder makes it all really yummy. A great recipe for using up odd bits.

Wednesday/15-Jul-15: For lunch I made Zucchini-Tuna Salad, a recipe I copied from a book I didn't keep. A pretty good variation on tuna salad. You start with equal piles (1 cup) of shredded zucchini and carrots. Stir in a can of tuna, drained and flaked. Then enough mayo to make make it a good consistency. Then add some chopped sweet pickle (I used cornichons), celery seed, and pickle juice. I added some lemon juice for the tartness and a bit of piment d'Esplette. Good stuff.

Dinner was Spaghetti Pangrattato with Cripsy Eggs (web), a very satisfying kind of meal. Then a salad. Then two squares of dark chocolate with almonds each. Then off to hear Gregorian chant.

Thursday/16-Jul-15: Shopping today. Relatively cheap, although there was lots of meat. (We are way ahead of past years in the amount we're spending on groceries. I'm not sure why, really. A bit worrying.)

Dinner was a half recipe of Fish in Red Chili Chutney (web). Pretty good, although not especially hot. Served with basmati rice and a half recipe of Pachadi—Indian Cucumber Salad (p147, GreeneGreens; cookbooker). Can't say this was especially Indian, but it was good. No radishes. Mini magnums for dessert.

Friday/17-Jul-15: Nothing happened in the kitchen today. Went for a balade gourmand this evening.  Almost seven kilometers up and down in the heat. Whew!

Saturday/18-Jul-15: Tosca and Mike for dinner this evening, so I was in the kitchen most of the day. Made up the broth for Buttermilk Ice Cream (MC) in the morning.

Made Sweet and Hot Peach Relish (p179, BigFlav), which was good, but hotter than I intended. This went with Spice-Rubbed Grilled Chicken Breasts with Sweet and Hot Peach Relish (p178, BigFlav). The spicy rub goes on the chicken after it's mostly cooked. I put it on the tray with chicken and Ed tripped leaving the kitchen, spilling most of it. So only once side got brushed with the sauce. Made the recommended to-withs, Parsley Salad with Bulgur, Mint, and Tomatoes (p216, BigFlav) and Roast Beet and Carrot Salad with Lemon-Mint Dressing (p204, BigFlav). The parsley salad is like a taboulleh with more veg in it. The beet and carrot salad is yummy; need to make that more often. For dessert there was ice cream and fresh raspberries. A nice evening all in all.

Sunday/19-Jul-15: Lovely lunch out with Tosca and Mike. No action in the kitchen.

This week in the kitchen

Monday/25-May-15: Used the amarone wine we bought in NL a couple of years ago to make Pot Roast of Beef Braised in Amarone Wine (ClassItal, p395). Pretty good pot roast, although the chunk of meat I got (what was it?) didn't have much marbling, so the meat was a trifle dry, if tasty. Served with Sautéed Broccoli with Olive Oil and Garlic (ClassItal, p477), which is pretty much how I make it if I go beyond steaming. And some polenta. We started with some ostrich rillettes and duck pâté from jars, drinking a bottle of Monbazillac that Bill got last week. It's surprising to me how a sweet white wine goes with this kind of thing. For after, there was cheese. I'm full.

Tuesday/26-May-15: Terry came to dinner this evening. For our apèro, we worked on the ostrich and duck pâtés along with a pâté de campagne fait à maison from the butcher. For a starter we had charentaise melon with pineau. For the main there was Grilled Pork Chops with Green Apple-Chipotle Salsa (BigFlav, p156; cookbooker). The salsa was really scrumptious. All-Purpose Rice and Beans (BigFlav, p262) as a go-with. Store-bought tarts for dessert, two gateaux basques and two pear-almond tartlettes.

Wednesday/27-May-15: We had lunch out with Bill before taking him to the train station then going on to shopping. Only some fruit and a few munchies for dinner,

Thursday/28-May-15: This morning the balloon guy called. It will be too windy tomorrow so our trip is postponed.

I didn't buy fish yesterday, since I'd had both salmon and lieu noir for lunch. Instead we had two kip filets done up as a half dose of Chicken in a Cream Parmesan and Sundried Tomato Sauce (web), seriouly yummy, with trio rice on the side. Then a big salad. For after we finished off two bits of cheese.

Friday/29-May-15: Caribbean night tonight. There was a half recipe of Camarones a la Criolla—Shrimp in Spicy Tomato Sauce (TLCarib, p24) served with rice and Concombres en Salade—Cucumber Salad (TLCarib, p24).The shrimp dish was easy and tasty, not divine but quite good enough. The cuke salad is very similar to one I make from a Thai cookbook, but with lime juice instead of white vinegar. Spicy!

For after there was Bolo di Rum—Rum Cake (TLCarib, p109) with vanilla ice cream. I've made this cake before. It seemed to me to taste more of lime this time, but maybe I misremember. I used the cuisinart for all the mixing, which make it really easy. We both like the gritty cornmeal texture with the soft cake. I used only 3/4cup of sugar (sucre de canne).

Saturday/30-May-15: Dinner was Kaye's Shrimp-Stuffed Eggplant (MC), which is a recipe from somewhere that I've modified enough to call my own. Served with brown rice and a little carrot salad with lemon vinaigrette.

Sunday/31-May-15: Leftover night. Some black bean and smoked sausage soup from the freezer mixed with leftover black beans and rice from Tuesday, with an ice cube of chile-soaking liquid tossed in for extra flavor. Very yummy. That was all.

This week in the kitchen

Monday/29-Jul-13: Working on our blueberry surplus, I made some Blueberry Scones (MC) this afternoon. Pretty good, they are.

The hot weather may be gone for a while, but there are still cantaloupe to use up. Tonight's dinner was Melon, Zucchini, and Pancetta Salad (PatSalads, p22). Pretty good it was too. I had only mâche and arugula, too much probably; the bitterness of a bit of frisée would probably have been nice. No honeydew melon, just a charentaise melon, which is similar to cantaloupe. Quite a nice salad. For afters, we ate a bit of goat cheese.

Tuesday/30-Jul-13: Pasta night. Made Dilly Pasta (PastaMach, p72) with Shrimp Dill Sauce (PastaMach, p135). The pasta had dried dill in it, but not much added flavor. The sauce was so-so, not one to do again.

Wednesday/31-Jul-13: Shopping today. Not very big in volume, but lots of money involved.

Dinner was Salmon & Avocado Salad (PatSalads, p80). I liked it, but Ed thought there was too much balsamic in the sauce. Which was interesting because there was none. I was thinking the sauce (mirin and soy) went very well with the smoked salmon, while he thought it overpowered it. I thought it would be a nice starter, in smaller portions, for an Asian-ish meal.

Thursday/1-Aug-13: Ed's Montbron choir had a picnic today, so I was up (relatively) early to prepare our food. First there was Cantaloupe Soup (Picnic, p25), which was tasting good up to the point of adding the balsamic vinegar. That changed the color and didn't enhance the flavor. For the main, there was some old favorites, Spicy Grilled Peppered Lamb Skewers (BigFlav, p142) along with the recommended Green Grape-Parsley Relish (BigFlav, p77) and potato salad à la Joy of Cooking, requested by Ed. Yesterday while shopping, I noticed cheesecake in the fresh cheese section and bought us a chunk for dessert. Yum.

Friday/2-Aug-13: Yogurt on overday.

The blueberry harvest is in full swing, so lots to use up. Dinner was Chicken & Blueberry Pasta Salad (web), a surprising combination, chicken breasts, pasta, feta, and blueberries, but it worked well. A simple salad to follow, then cheese, trying to use up what we didn't eat with Jody and Steve. After dinner we picked another pint or so of blueberries. There will be another batch to pick, but may not as much.

Saturday/3-Aug-13: Made up some Vinegary Barbecue Sauce (Everlasting, p193) for tomorrow's dinner. Finger-licking good.

Dinner was Pasta with Summer Vegetables in a Spicy Peanut Sauce (MC 2BTried). Not as spicy as advertised. Not bad altogether. Then some crêmes brulées from the freezer for dessert.

Sunday/4-Aug-13: Tonight we had sort of pulled pork sandwiches, some cooked pork from the freezer that soaked overnight in the Vinegary Barbecue Sauce, got reheated, and served in ciabattas. Now, that's a really good sauce, sweet and sour and spicy. Served with Mama's Garlic Coleslaw (MC, HandyBook) and some Oven Roasted Corn that was supposed to be amazing, but wasn't really.

Yogurt on overnight.
