This week in the kitchen

Monday/13-Oct-14: The start of a hectic week.

Dinner was Curried Shrimp & Potato Kebabs (web), sort of a half recipe, except we had seven shrimp each, since that's what was in the package. I used all the curry powder and halfish of the rest of the stuff. Served with some steamed broccoli tossed with pesto from a jar. Pretty good altogether. The sauce for the kebabs went will with everything. Two squares each of hazelnut chocolate for after.

Tuesday/14-Oct-14: Jim arrived this afternoon. For dinner we had Pork Tenderloin Diane (MC), an old favorite. I used up our potatoes making some simple boiled potatoes, with butter and some frozen parlsley, since my parsley had kicked the bucket. And some carrots loosely based on Glazed Cumin Carrots (MC). We getting pretty vegetable-less the house now. And no shopping tomorrow.

Wednesday/15-Oct-14: We had our anniversary lunch out tomorrow. For dinner we had fruit and popcorn.

Using our tomatillo harvest, all five ounces of it, I started some Tomatillo Jam (p31, Tomatillo), leaving the fruit (vegetable?) to macerate in sugar overnight.

Thursday/16-Oct-14: Yogurt on overday.

Finished off the Tomatillo Jam. Probably a bit too gingery, since I neglected to round down in my recipe cutback. We'll see.

Lunch out today. Only munchies in the evening.

The VPG I'm reading has an article on The rabbit: a meat to rediscover. Must be a city magazine. Rabbit is certainly eating frequently out here in the country. People keep rabbits for food. It's available in the grocery stores. It's served in restaurants.

Friday/17-Oct-14: Jim left this morning, then we went to Limoges to pick up BIll. In between I put Chicken Vindaloo (p114, IndianSC; cookbooker) in the crockpot. Lunched at at frairie, then back for a vet appointment for Oscar, whose right eye has gone wonky again. Conjunctivitis perhaps.

For before-dinner munchies I made more Spicy Cucumber Wedges (p172, MJ1). For dinner we had the vindaloo, which was okay, but nothing special. And some basmati rice. And some Green Peas in a Creamy Sauce (p87, Q&E), an old favorite. For dessert we had some strawberry ice cream with a wedge of a chocolate tart bought at the frairie; strange combination, but both were good.

Saturday/18-Oct-14: Tried a dab of the tomatillo jam for breakfast. Interesting, a trifle too sweet perhaps.

Lunch at the Phoenix book sale. Dinner at the fête du vin in St Sornin. Not even going to run the dishwasher tonight.

Sunday/19-Oct-14: Today was the over-60s dinner at Mazerolles, a multi-course treat. Bill actually felt like eating a sandwich. Ed and I had only fruit.

This week in the kitchen

Monday/14-Jul-14: It was clear out the fridge and freezer night tonight. I started with a recipe from a store-bought package of pâte brisée, a tart with ricotta and chard. There was a package of pâte brisée in the fridge needing to be used. And a tub of ricotta. No chard, but the rest of a package of fresh spinach. And, look, the end of a wedge of bleu d'Auvergne. And that made a nice tart, although a homemade piecrust is much nicer. We bought thought crème fraîche would have been nicer than the ricotta. Next time. Made a salad of grated carrots with a lemon vinaigrette. For dessert, I made Chocolate Soufflé Cake for 2 (MC). If I ever get my Mastercook back in service (right now it's on a computer that I can't access and it doesn't run on the computer I'm using), I need to include this in my HandyBook, since it's an easy thing to put together if you got a few minutes while everything else cooks.

Tuesday/15-Jul-14: Shopping today. Looking around for things that might be of use for this month's Creole and Cajun cooking, found some rivierkreeftjes (yes, labelled in Dutch), which must be crawdads, frozen, but cooked. Bought a pair of fresh beets and roasted them when I got home. Too often, I buy fresh beets and they sit around waiting to be roasted until they go bad. Fresh beets are a bit unusual here. Four-packs of ones that are already cooked are almost always available, but two of us don't usually eat that many in a week, and they last only a few days.

Dinner was Maple-Chipotle Salmon, a recipe I collected for EAT-L a while ago. (Can't find it on the web. This is no big loss; it's not a keeper.) The salmon was basted/glazed with a mixture of maple syrup, grainy mustard, chipotle powder, and black pepper. Too sweet for our taste. Was accompanied by a sauce of sour cream, mayo, dill, orange juice, and orange zest, was was good in itself (and went well with the sautéed zucchini), but didn't go with the sweet salmon at all. Then there was sautéed zucchini, and "Old Bay" Grilled Steak Fries (web). I took the lazy way and used real Old Bay seasoning, rather than mixing my own, and mixed it with chipotle powder. Actually this is a pretty good way to do potatoes. Whole potatoes are first boiled till they're about 2/3 of the way done. Then cut into fingers. Then mixed with a dab of olive oil and the spices and grilled. It might be good to shake up the fingers, as with Dusolier's Perfect Roast Potatoes, to help give them a good crust.

We were full, but before I made dinner I made some Cranberry Upside-Down Cake. The recipe is supposed to be from the November 1994 issue of Gourmet magazine, but I haven't been able to find the recipe. Too bad because it's good!

Wednesday/16-Jul-14: Yogurt on overday.

The cranberry upside-down cake was really good for breakfast!

We  had kind of a thrown together dinner. The main was Aubergines Farcies aux Falafels et Sauce au Sésame (web), which is essentially roasted eggplants stuffed with a felafel-like mixture with a tahini sauce. This was quite good. With the innards of the eggplants, I made a little salad with some oven-dried tomatoes from the freezer. This was also good. I used one of my roasted beets to make Beet Salad (Roden, p68; cookbooker); this was really yummy, although it wanted way too much yogurt. I used one jar, which is a long half cup, and though it was more than enough, while a whole cup was called for. Nevertheless, it is a yummy salad. And some whole-wheat couscous, nothing special, but good enough. For dessert we had a whole Magnum Classic each. Decadence!

Thursday/17-Jul-14: Dinner was Mara's Broccoli and Scallop Pasta Sauce (MarCuc, p180) over cascareccia, followed by a big salad. I'm full.

Friday/18-Jul-14: Another day of oppressive heat. Dinner was pork chops for IHCC, accompanied by mashed potatoes, and corn and broccoli. Some chocolate mini magnums for dessert.

Saturday/19-Jul-14: Stormy with lots of lightning. Had to shut down the computers before I could write on Saturday.

Dinner was a half dose of Spaghetti with Shrimp, Tomatoes, and Capers (30MinPasta, p98; cookbooker). Good stuff. Then a big salad. Then a mini magnum each.

Sunday/20-Jul-14: Ed's Rochechouart choir gave a concert at the Limoges cathedral this afternoon. I left a crockpot dish cooking, so we'd be able to have dinner when we got back. That was a have dose of Pakistani "Old Clothes" Beef Curry (IndianSC, p121; cookbooker). This was kind of so-so. For sides, there was plain basmati rice and Yoghurt with Eggplant (MJ1, p164), which was a nice accompaniment to the beef.

This week in the kitchen

Monday/16-May-11: Dinner was a one-third recipe of Ginger-Garlic Eggplant (IndianSC), a recipe that came in an email from a cookbook I don't have. Yet. I used all chilies for the third, and it was respectably hot. Probably half the chiles would be enough. Made some raita, using my standard recipe (MJ1, p162). And cherry sorbet for dessert. Not too bad.

Tuesday/17-May-11: For our midday meal today I warmed the broccoli/roquefort/walnut quiche. Still yummy. Then a salad. That was all.

Wednesday/18-May-11: Off to Bordeaux today. Only a small lunch there. For dinner I cooked some brown rice, added some chopped red onion, some chopped red bell pepper from the freezer, a small can of corn, a can of chickpeas, some chopped parsley, and some spices. Not bad all together. More cherry sorbet for dessert.

Thursday/19-May-11: Shopped this morning and really didn't feel like cooking this evening. I bought some cod fillets on sale, which turned out to be really bony. Feeling very uninspired, I used it to make Chile-Garlic Shrimp (MC), with the cod cut in strips. It dissolved so the sauce was tasty, but rather mushy. And a simple salad with a sack of cheap lettuce at its sell-by date. Finished our bit of St. Marcellin for afters.

Friday/20-May-11: First post-op check-up this afternoon, then shopping at Brico Depot. Decided to eat at the Buffalo Grill, which Ed had planned to try last Friday, but didn't have the opportunity. Ugh, very missable.

Saturday/21-May-11: Put some lamb on to marinate for two day before cooking. Made a half recipe of Buttermilk Ice Cream (MC) to freeze in the next days. I inadvertently opened a can of condensed milk (rather than evaporated) while making that, so I also made a half recipe of No-Cook Indian Ice Cream (Kulfi) (MC). Now we're quite well-stocked with ice creams.

Dinner was Sausages and Cream (ClassicItal, p201), made with homemade Italian sausage from the freezer using Guiliano's recipe. When I first made this for Cooking Italy, I used an inappropriate sausage, and it was not a success. This time, with the homemade sausage it was quite good. Kind of comfort food like, actually. I thought about adding peas to it, for some veg matter, but didn't in the end. Next time perhaps. Followed by a big salad. Then we finished off the cherry sorbet, which is a good thing since there are two more ice creams ready to go.

Sunday/22-May-11: Today was the day for French taxes, so not much going on in the kitchen. Defrosted a pair of turkey scallops and breaded them (dipping first in flour, then in buttermilk, then polenta with garlic and chili powders). Served those with shredded zucchini, also from the freezer, more or less following the MW@Home recipe. For a salad we had the rest of Wednesday dinner with red-leaf lettuce from the garden.
