This week in the kitchen

Monday/27-Jan-20: Scurried around this afternoon to find something for tomorrow's meal to use up the tomato pulp that I mistakenly defrosted.

Dinner was a halfish recipe of Tuscan Chicken Stew (Braises, p70). I thought this was just ok, but Ed liked it more. As suggested, served with Herbed Wide Noodles (Braises, p121), using mafalda as the pasta. A pair of chocolate-covered madeleines each for after.

Tuesday/28-Jan-20: Dinner was Penne with Broccoli (web), sort of. I didn't have enough of any whole wheat pasta so used casareccia*. I made more or less the whole recipe, enough to serve three, not six. But good it was. Some mini ice cream cups for dessert.

*Casareccia is one of my favorite pastas. Usually I get them as De Cecco #88. Last week I bought some as Garafalo #88. Do you suppose that 88 actually has some meaning to the Italian pasta-buying public? I always thought it was just De Cecco's way of numbering their products.

Wednesday/29-Jan-20: Off for a haircut today.

Dinner was pork chops, with ancho sauce from the freezer, leftover beans-and-rice and coleslaw, and polenta squares from the freezer. (I put the squares under the broiler, set the timer, then forgot what I'd set it for, so they got a bit burnt on top. Otherwise they were pretty good. We ate tastily. No dessert.

Thursday/30-Jan-20: Shopping today. As I was cooking dinner I discovered that we managed to come home without a bunch of the veggies I gathered. I think I must have put them in the wrong cart. So someone might have gone home with radishes, broccoli, zucchini, snijbonen, and tomatoes that they didn't think they wanted.

I finished off Paula Wolfert's World of Food today. This one of Wolfert's books wasn't much of a success, but was recommended in Unforgettable as an unrecognized masterpiece. I was disappointed. Wolfert's world is largely France and Mediterranean. Nothing wrong with that food, but it's more limited than the title suggests. We'll see.

Dinner was supposed to Baked Salmon with Charred Onions & Old Bay Radishes (EW/oct19; web). I used the end of a zucchini to replace the radishes. And a can of corn replaced the snijbonen that would have been our side veg. Not bad altogether. Then some pieces of three kings' tart that I got at the boulangerie.

Friday/31-Jan-20: Dinner was Risotto Friuli-Style, with Rosemary and White Wine (MarCuc, p226. I used canned stock, wild instead of beef, since that needed to be used up. My garden rosemary is blooming again. Risotto is comfort food. This was good. Then a big salad. Then a pair of chocolate-covered madeleines each.

Saturday/1-Feb-20: While I was making dinner, I made some chocolate tapioca so we'd have a bit of dessert.

Dinner was a half-ish dose of Cajun Cabbage and Noodles (web). I used up some odd bits of whole wheat pasta (penne and fusilli) for the pasta, and didn't do a good job of halving the amount. I used some home-made cajun spice I had in the cupboard rather than make some new. The was pretty good. The smoked sausages (bio) were especially good. I'll look for them again and get some for the freezer if they're still there. We're stuffed.

Yogurt on overnight.

Sunday/2-Feb-20: Dinner was Vodka Marinated Steak (web). This was easy and pretty good. I didn't slice as directed, but served a chunk of meat on each plate. Served with Clothilde Dusoulier's Perfect Roasted Potatoes (web) and some steamed broccoli. Finished the chocolate tapioca for after. We're stuffed.

This week in the kitchen

Monday/21-Oct-19: Yogurt on overday.

Dinner was Spicy Peanut Noodles (web). This was easy and okay, but not the best of this kind of thing. Spicy it wasn't really. I used more of the chili paste with garlic than asked and it was still only mildly spicy. Serves six? As a dainty side maybe. The recipe as written is for two main servings. For a side we had the rest of Mom's Cabbage Salad, which was much tinglier than the noodles.

Tuesday/22-Oct-19: Dinner was a halfish version of Pollo a la Chilindrón—Sautéed Chicken with Peppers, Tomatoes and Olives (TLS&P, p58). Like many of the Spanish dishes, this wasn't highly spiced, but was still tasty. The tomatoes I bought this week were rotten, so I used some frozen, canned tomato pulp. And used all of the olives for my half recipe.

Served with trio rice and Green Bean Salad with Pickled Shallots (HeartArt, p131). I collected this recipe somewhere on the web and discovered that I have the book it came from last week. Having only a few green beans I cut the pickled shallots back to a third, but still have some left for a salad or a sandwich. Easy to make and very tasty. Some chocolate-covered madeleines for after.

Wednesday/23-Oct-19: Dinner at quiz tonight. Nothing much happened in the kitchen.

Thursday/24-Oct-19: Shopping today.

Dinner was a halfish recipe of Thai Fish and Corn Curry (Braises, p86). Seems like I made this just over a year ago, without a note in the book. It was okay if underspiced. For a starter we had store-bought nems, shrimp and crab; these were pretty good. Some store-bought riz au lait for after.

Friday/25-Oct-19: Leftovers for dinner tonight. We had the rest of the Mushroom and Leek Galette, followed by a really simple salad (lettuce and vinaigrette). Then we finished the Pet't Basque cheese. Then a pair of chocolate-covered madeleines eat.

Yogurt on overnight.

Saturday/26-Oct-19: Dinner was a half dose of Sara's Persian Chicken (Braises, p71; cookbooker). Pretty good stuff. As suggested, accompanied by Apricot Couscous (Braises, p116); easy and a nice variation on plain couscous. Also some String Bean Salad (Roden, p69), which was good. Notice this book is so old that it has string beans instead of green beans. Some chocolate-covered madeleines for after.

Sunday/26-Oct-19: We went to a concert this afternoon, and I just didn't feel like cooking after. So it was pizza instead. Nothing further happened in the kitchen.

This week in the kitchen

Monday/23-Jul-18: Our main course was Shish Kebab (Grilled Meat on Skewers), Marinade I (Roden, p204; cookbooker). Buzzed all the marinade ingredients (olive oil, lemon juice, onion, bay leaf, thyme) with the staff mixer. Easy and really tasty. Accompanied by Eggplant with Tomatoes (Roden, p286) and the store-bought Moroccan couscous mix. All delicious. Drank most of the Chateau St Louis Esprit with the meal. Very good. Very sorry we bought only one bottle.

Yogurt on overnight.

Tuesday/24-Jul-18: Reheated the zucchini-cheese casserole for dinner, with a big salad. Finished the Esprit. Not as good with the casserole as it was with the lamb.

Wednesday/25-Jul-18: Farewell lunch with Patrice and Wim today. Nothing happening in the kitchen tonight.

Shopped today. Bought a new yogurt starter since the last one has gone sour very quickly, after less than a month.

Thursday/26-Jul-18: Hot weather. In spite of that, dinner was Thai Fish and Corn Curry (Braises, p86). I made a fullish recipe with about half the fish, which was lieu noir. And canned corn. Good, but might have liked a bit more green curry paste, maybe even 1 tablespoon (instead of 1 teaspoon). Melon with red currants and pineau for dessert. (Wait, isn't that a starter?)

Friday/27-Jul-18: Had lunch with Cath in St Junien, followed by a visit to a small exhibit of ceramics. Nothing happened in the kitchen except ...

Yogurt on overnight, with the new starter.

Saturday/28-Jul-18: It was meant to be pasta-making day, but we decided to go to a movie, so a quick meal was called for. There was ravioli alla panna, with some mushroom ravioli, and a big salad, and some chocolate-covered madeleines for dessert.

Sunday/29-Jul-18: Earlyish meal before we went off for a concert this evening. We started with Pomiane's beet with cream plate, from memory, and made with the goat's milk crème fraîche that I got on sale this week. Yum. Our main was Crunchy Chicken Cutlets (web), with cornflakes. Instead of only two plates for dipping the cutlets (mustard/egg/garlic/cinnamon and crushed corn flakes), I added a third with plain flour. Dipped that first, then the mustard-egg mixture, then the corn flakes. Very good. Served with peas (shucked in the morning) and corn (not used for Thursday's curry), and some chickpea-and-corn pasta. Made some tapioca pudding using the French version of tapioca I bought recently plus the last bit of my US stash. With brown sugar instead of white. It was good.

This week in the kitchen

Monday/4-Jun-18: Day wasted dealing with a Mac problem when Calendar data was destroyed when I tried to sync the Mini with MacBair. The Apple guy couldn't figure out how to get the Calendar to accept the restored file of data, so I had to go back to a manual backup I made last Friday. Lost several days of writing, plus all my old Travel calendars. Very unhappy, totally wasted day.

Our meal was Broccoli Rice Casserole from Scratch (web), made with brown rice. This is kind of mac-and-cheese with broccoli and rice instead of macaroni. Pretty good. Strawberries and the rest of our buttermilk ice cream for dessert.

Tuesday/5-Jun-18: Indian for dinner. I made Oven-Roasted Chicken Tikka (MadeIndia, p36; cookbooker), using turkey oysters (that nice little muscle at the back of the pelvis on both sides) instead of skinless, boneless chicken thighs, of which there were none at the shop last week. I made the suggested side, Chaat Salad (MadeIndia, p192; cookbooker), which we both loved. And some plain basmati rice and some Yoghurt with Cucumber and Mint (MJ1, p162), the best raita recipe. For dessert, store-bought rice puddings topped with a sprinkle of cardamon, almost, but not quite, kheer.

Bit of a gully-washer this evening. It flooded the entry and under the stereo. Water dripping from the ceiling on the other end of the room.

Wednesday/6-Jun-18: Late meal today. I made Lighter Chicken Enchiladas, a recipe I collected from EAT-L in 2013. Made it up as a casserole, which is much easier than rolling enchiladas. Used up my tortillas. Used more turkey oysters instead of chicken. Used mimolette for the cheese, and much more than asked. So-so. Served with Mama's Spanish Rice and guacamole. We're stuffed.

Yogurt on overnight.

Thursday/7-Jun-18: Shopping today. Another set of people on Thursdays. Funny.

Our meal was Sicilian Swordfish Stew (Braises, p85; cookbooker). The recipe was a bit off, but the result was delicious. For dessert, a nectarine and some strawberries, topped with a bit of cream.

Our raspberries are going crazy. Need to pick some tomorrow morning.

Friday/8-Jun-18: Ed finished Cath's tiling today, while I did a mountain of ironing.

Leftover broccoli-rice casserole for dinner, and a salad, followed by two store-bought rice puddings.

Saturday/9-Jun-18: Made up some Strawberry Rhubarb Quick Jam (GrainAM, p71; HandyBook) with rhubarb from the potager and strawberries from shopping that look like they won't get eaten.

Leftover strange enchiladas, Spanish rice, and guacamole for dinner. Ice cream bars for dessert.

Yogurt on overnight. Power blip shut it off, but it seems to have cooked long enough nevertheless.

Sunday/10-Jun-18: Ed had a concert today, and I no had way to get there so stayed home and did Stuff.

Dinner was Pork Chop with Rhubarb (Pomiane, p129; cookbooker). This is just pork chops with rhubarabsauce instead of applesauce. Good, though. (Rhubarb from the potager.) Served with orzo (with lemon juice and parsley) and Asparagus with Chive Blossom and Sesame (web). The asparagus with okay, but wasn't the best veggie choice with the rhubarb&pork.
