Monday/27-Apr-20: Ed picked up an order from Leclerc today. Meant to make a rijstvlaai today in honor of Koningsdag, but didn't have the oomph. So we have lots of milk now.
Made up a crumble with a sack of frozen blueberries and the melon gravel left from the ice cream broth. For the crumble itself, I used a recipe I'd put together for a generic crumble topping, with some almond slivers added.
For dinner we had Thai pulled pork from the freezer served over leftover pitas. With some Thai Cucumber Salad with Peanuts (web). Good stuff, both. Followed by the crumble, which was yummy.
Tuesday/28-Apr-20: Pizza for dinner. With grilled zucchini and broccoli (the eggplant I bought wasn't good), artichoke hearts from a jar, capers, black olives, mozzarella, goat cheese, and my pizza sauce. All good. And yummy crumble for after. We're stuffed.
Wednesday/29-Apr-20: What a day. Discovered this afternoon that the mother of our crazy neighbor, crazy herself, had actually been "incarcerated" after her last visit to Condadeuil. Apparently released today and was supposed to go to Paris to stay with a friend, but came here instead. Too much excitement.
Dinner was a halfish verion of Risotto with Green Asparagus (MC). Pretty good it was. Then we finished the delicious crumble.
Yogurt on overnight.
Thursday/30-Apr-20: We both had a hankering for tiger's cries, so tonight we had a very tasty dinner of Sliced Pork with Tiger Sauce (Kuo, p330). Served with Stir-Fried Shredded Cabbage with Carrots (Kuo, p390). And some plain basmati. I made a bit of chili oil for the tiger sauce, and it was pretty assertive. Some cups of HD ice cream for dessert.
Friday/1-May-20: Didn't feel much like cooking today, so we had the rest of the Thai pulled pork, with basmati recipe rice and some Thai-Style Broccoli with Garlic (web). Don't expect the broccoli is very authentic, but it was easy and good. More HD ice cream cups for dessert.
Saturday/2-May-20: Dinner was, more or less, a third-half version of Asparagus Lasagne (web), enough for two biggish servings. This was tasty, but a cheesy, gloopy mess. For a starter, there was Zucchini Carpaccio with Avocado, Lemon Thyme, and Pistachio Oil (VegHarv, p214), a favorite I discovered last summer.
Before dinner I finally froze up the melon ice cream. Interesting, it was, if not a favorite.
Yogurt on overnight.
Sunday/3-May-20: Leftover pizza for dinner. Some chocolate cookies after.

This week in the kitchen
Monday/20-Apr-20: Yesterday's bread was delicious, one of the best whole wheat ones.
Dinner was a halfish dose of Garlic Noodles with Beef and Broccoli (web). I steamed real broccoli and used soba noodles instead of spaghetti and, of course, I used the red pepper flakes. Really easy, and fast, and good. Chocolate-covered madeleines for dessert.
Tuesday/21-Apr-20: Made another loaf of Carole Walberg's White Wheat Bread (MC) today. It's good stuff.
Dinner was a halfish recipe of Asparagus and Olive Tortellini (MC; VT/may96), which I've made before. There were blue cheese ravioli in stead of tortellini. Pretty good. Then a salad. And the last of our chocolate-covered madeleines for after. I wonder when we'll ever be able to get these again?
Made an order at Intermarché and we could pick it up tomorrow!
Wednesday/22-Apr-20: Our Intermarché order included everything I ordered. Yay! Had to jiggle the meal plan a bit, because I didn't expect to be getting fish so quickly.
While dinner was cooking I roasted a pair of red bell peppers so I can make up some pizza sauce tomorrow.
We got 500g of salmon in two pieces. I used one of the pieces for a halfish recipe of Cilantro-Lime Honey Garlic Salmon (Baked in Foil) (web). This was pretty good. Served with steamed haricots verts tossed with some olive oil, lime juice, salt, and red pepper flakes. And some polenta. For dessert there was strawberries and cream.
Yogurt on overnight.
Thursday/23-Apr-20: Made up some pizza sauce this morning and put two batches in the freezers.
Dinner was loosely based on Saumon au Curry et Salade de Riz (VPG; web). Having lots of haricots verts to use, I added some of these. I cut the salmon into cubes and marinated it with Thai green curry paste from a jar, then sautéed the cubes to top the salad. It was pretty good.
Friday/24-Apr-20: Having a Charentais melon that needed using, I made up the broth for Easy Melon Ice Cream (web). It didn't buzz up smooth, so I strained out the gravely bits. Planned to serve them over crumbled cookies perhaps tonight, but we were full, so that will wait for another night. I was thinking they might be good over Vanilla Pecan ice cream.
Made some of Chef John's pita breads (web). Although most of them puffed up nicely, they weren't in two layers for the eating. Much tastier than store-bought, though, so we coped.
For dinner, we pigged out on some yummy store-bought felafels. Served these with, yes, pita breads, and Yogurt-Tahini Sauce (H2CEV, p792). I'd intended to make two sauces, as usual, but this combined the tahini and the yogurt in one and was delicious. Need to get more tahini now, but how? No dessert, since we were both quite full.
An interesting beetle joined us at the end of the meal. Unfortunately no camera was handy. Can't find it in our insect book, so it remains unknown.
Saturday/25-Apr-20: Used up our carrots to make Peanut Butter Soup (GreenBook) for lunch.
Made a loaf of English Muffin Bread (MC). It's a bit sunken on top, but I'm sure it will taste okay. I see now I meant to make English Muffin Bread 2 (also MC), but lost the thread when I went to do it. Next time. The bread came out with a bit of a sunken top, too much liquid, as I remember.
Made up some Roasted Cumin. Burnt the first batch though lack of attention, so made a second. I'm now very low on cumin seed.
We had a thunderstorm this afternoon, resulting in flooded entry and water under the stereo system. In addition, the passage between the house and kitchen was flooded. Sigh.
Dinner was a half recipe of Best Grilled Chicken Thighs with Garam Masala (CL/jul-aug18; web). This was easy and very good. Served with plain basmati rice and Pan-Grilled Zucchini (MW@Home, p173), also good. For dessert, there was some vanilla pecan ice cream with melon crumbles. I thought this was good; Ed thought the melon and pecans didn't go together.
Sunday/26-Apr-20: Sunken top or not, Ed really likes this English Muffin Bread.
Dinner was a half dose of Hard-Boiled Eggs in a Tomato-Cream Sauce (WorldVeg, p517). Served with plain basmati rice and South Indian-Style Green Beans (MJ@Home, p147). All was good. Right at the end of the prep, Ed knocked over the bread machine pan (yes, left from yesterday) full of soapy water, filling some of my little prepared dishes. A mess to clean up. Really shook my pacing. Had to back up and re-prep some things and organize all. Oddly disconcerting. For dessert we split the one chocolate easter bunny we scored this year.
Yogurt on overnight.
Suzanne Dunaway's No-Knead Bread on overnight.

This week in the kitchen
Monday/13-Apr-20: Monday already.
What I'd planned for dinner had tomatoes in it, and we're investigating if tomatoes, even seedless, are given Ed a new symptom. So I scrambled a bit to come up with a new meal.
For our main, we had a half recipe of Shrimp and Broccoli Alfredo (web). I used the end of a package of small shrimp, rather than bigger ones. Mafalda for the pasta. It was good. Then a Raw Asparagus Salad (web). I didn't make the dressing as laid out; I stopped are the ketchup and skipped the Worcestershire sauce too. Still this was a nice change for a salad. For dessert, we finished off the kheer cubes.
Mixed up a batch of Susan Dunaway's No-Knead Bread (GoogleDrive); not sure where I picked up this recipe. We'll see.
Tuesday/14-Apr-20: Baked up the No-Knead Bread, but following Lahey's instructions for baking. Good stuff it is.
Dinner was Uzbek Palov—Rice Pilaf with Lamb and Vegetables (TLRus, p67), a recipe from Central Asia. I didn't have lamb cubes, but did have a lamb steak in the freezer sufficient for about a third recipe. I thought this was good, in the way pilaf-y things are, if a bit bland. As suggested, I served with Non—Flat Onion Breads (TLRus, p70). I made about a third recipe of this, four flatbreads, but burnt the fourth one beyond use. Not bad.
For a salad, I loosely followed Asparagus, Tomato and Feta Salad with Balsamic Vinaigrette (web). I decidedly didn't add the honey, since balsamic, especially reduced, is plenty sweet enough. This was interesting. No dessert.
Wednesday/15-Apr-20: Ed picked up orders from Leclerc and from Intermarché today.
We had a quick dinner, our pig-out on a big can of tamales, with some guacamole and lettuce. Yummy. No dessert needed.
Yogurt on overnight. Susan Dunaway's No-Knead Bread on overnight.
Thursday/16-Apr-20: Baked the break in the morning. This is so easy and makes a beautiful loaf.
Dinner was about a third recipe of Asparagus-Pesto Lasagna (web). This made a nice dinner for two with salad. It would have been better to steam or boil the asparagus bits, which were just short of nicely done, rather than sautéing them. Mine wasn't as hyper-low-fat as intended. I used butter and whole milk for the bechamel; I did forgot the Parmesan. Strawberries and vanilla-pecan ice cream for dessert; pecans weren't the best go-with for strawberries
Friday/17-Apr-20: Dinner was a half recipe of Chicken with Artichokes & Olives (web). This wasn't bad. Served with long-grain brown rice and some roasted cauliflower and broccoli. We started outside, but brought everything in when it started to rain. Not to mention the lightning which was threatening.
Saturday/18-Apr-20: Dinner was sort of a half recipe of Sautéed Scallops with Crushed Peppercorns (web). Good stuff. Served with trio rice and leftover cauliflower and broccoli from yesterday, topped up with some roasted carrot slices. Some cookies for after.
Yogurt on overnight.
Sunday/19-Apr-20: Made a loaf of Carole Walberg's White Wheat Bread (MC) in the bread machine; WW/Rapid/M/-/-. No idea who Carole Walberg is, and I made no note of where this recipe came from.
For dinner I used up the eggplants on hand and some of the ground beef in the freezer to make Pasta with Roasted Eggplant and Meat Sauce (web). Froze half the sauce for another day. This was pretty good and really easy to make. Served with a small salad of two sucrines. Some squares of chocolate for after.

This week in the kitchen
Monday/6-Apr-20: When I ordered rumsteak at Intermarché, I neglected to say that I wanted a thick cut. What arrived was quite thin, so I searched for something else for dinner. I made Savoury Beef with Asparagus (HotWok, p98). I used to use this book a lot, but not so much since we've moved here. This was an untried recipe, perfect since we have a lot of asparagus right now. Pretty good it was. Then we had last night's salad, which I forgot at lunchtime. No dessert so far.
Tuesday/7-Apr-20: Used up the last bit of cabbage and the bird sausages from the freezer to make Sausage and Cabbage Pasta (web). This was easy and pretty good. Some chocolate-covered madeleine for after. We're getting low on these, and no way to replenish the stock.
Wednesday/8-Apr-20: Placed another order with Intermarché Drive, to be picked up Saturday.
Made some English Muffin Bread (MC) for tomorrow.
Dinner was, vaguely, Asparagus and Leeks on Toast (VegSups, p183). I used a (French) ciabatta for the bread. Goat cheese for the Fontina. Frozen spinach for fresh. Forgot the lemon juice at the end. Still it wasn't bad, surprisingly good even. Some chocolate-covered madeleines for after. These are getting scarce. We can't replenish till we can go into Leclerc.
Thursday/9-Apr-20: Made a loaf of Bill Hatcher's Italian Bread (MC) today.
Our first fresco meal today. Dinner was a halfish recipe of Roasted Cauliflower Salad with Lemon Tahini Dressing (web). This was unusual but good. I served over big lettuce leaves; used frozen parsley because I forgot to order the real stuff last time. It looks like I ordered plain vanilla ice cream, but we got vanilla pecan; we had that for after.
Yogurt on overnight.
Friday/10-Apr-20: This morning, I went off to pick up a package with flour and rice at a package depot place. The first time I've had proper shoes or jeans on in weeks. Five kilos of flour fills up my Tupperware Cake Taker.
Dinner was a half recipe of Linguine with Tuna Fish Sauce (PastaCarlu, p24), which we've had several times and remains good. Then a big salad. Then Nigella's Emergency Brownies (web; GoogleDrive), which were quite good. Ed had his with cream; I didn't.
Saturday/11-Apr-20: Ed picked up the Intermarché Drive order today. No strawberries, but we've got asparagus again. And fish for two nights.
While dinner was in the making, we munched on some Spicy Cucumber Wedges (MJ1, p172). We have a surplus of cukes for the next week or so. This is a start on using them up.
First of our fish dinners was Grilled Masala Salmon (MJ@Home, p46) cooked on the bbq. We've enjoyed this before; it's still good. Served with Potato Chaat (MJ@Home, p165) and Zucchini and Yellow Summer Squash with Cumin (MJ@Home, p174) (only zucchini). We've had both of these before too, and they were still good. For dessert there was Vermicelli Kheer (MJ@Home, p274). I've made a half recipe of this before, and remarked that it never really thickened. This time it set like glue. I think the store-bought vermicelli are not thin enough. Tastes good, though.
Sunday/12-Apr-20: Made some Authentic French Bread (Magic, p22) for our next bread.
Dinner was Fish Kebabs—Spicy Cod and Salmon Patties (web). This was good, but hard to believe it would serve four. I thought it might serve three; Ed said, No way, it's perfect for two. Served with plain basmati rice and Carrot and Onion Salad (MJ1, p171). For dessert we had some of the Vermicelli Kheer with cream. Good taste, bad texture.
Yogurt on overnight.
