This week in the kitchen

Monday/18-Jul-16: Summer hot has come upon us.

Leftover night tonight. Defrosted some cooked chicken to have with the sauce from Saturday's dinner. Served over leftover naan—the packaged kind, rather than the horrible things I made. There was a bit of peas from last night and some corn on the cob I impulse-bought last week. There's still the Vaguely Vietnamese cole slaw which has to wait for another day, because we wanted to finish off the hot chocolate ice cream.

Tuesday/19-Jul-16: Too hot today. Dinner was Kitcheree with Lime Pickle. For dessert we had some little ice creams. That was all.

Yogurt on overnight.

Wednesday/20-Jul-16: Shopping today. In the evening we went with friends to the marché des producteurs at Chabanais. Nice food. Came home with rillettes des canard, some lovely brown sourdough bread, and various sausages (canard, aurouch, porc noir) that will make meals in the coming months.

Thursday/21-Jul-16: Another Indian meal. New dishes were Fish Mollee, Kachumber, and Kheer. Served with more Lime Pickle, Coconut Rice (30MinInd, p100). Pretty nice tastes.

Friday/22-Jul-16: Lunch out with friends today, so in theory, nothing should be happening in the kitchen. Instead we discovered yesterday that we're due at a charity picnic tomorrow, so I'm busy:
  • Grilling eggplant slices for Roasted Eggplant and Pepper Sandwiches (Picnic, p23)
  • Making a half dose of Mango Cinnamon Crisp (Picnic, p44), using the end of my sack of frozen mango slices and the remaining blueberries, making it a Mango-Blueberry Cinnamon Crisp.
  • Making Cantaloupe Soup (Picnic, p25).
  • Making guacamole.
Only sandwiches to assemble tomorrow, and packing it all up.

Yogurt on overnight.

Saturday/23-Jul-16: All was good at the picnic. The Cantaloupe Soup was refreshing. The sandwich good, the guacamole good. The mango and blueberry combination worked great.  Nothing much else happened in the kitchen today.

Sunday/24-Jul-16: Started Dried Apricot & Amaretto Conserve (FancyPant, p127). The apricots and raisins will soak in the fridge overnight.

Early meal today before a concert this evening. We had Chettinad Chicken, with Spiced Beets (30MinInd, p88), and plain basmati rice. That was enough.

This week in the kitchen

Monday/5-Apr-16: Yes, that Beefsteak Pie has come in handy. We had the rest of it for our lunch today, along with a melange of sautéed veggies. And a mini magnum for after.

Tuesday/5-Apr-16: Dinner out in Limoges tonight, prior to a concert. Nothing happened in the kitchen.

Wednesday/6-Apr-16: Dinner was a half recipe of Gnocchi met Citroenricotta (AH, web); seems to be from a 2007 issue! I had some store-bought gnocchi in the freezer and used them up for this. Pretty good and easy. I did forget the grated cheese at the end, but neither of us missed it. Then a big salad. For dessert, I mixed the rest of the ricotta (which was a bit grainy from being frozen) with a bit of crême de framboise and used that to top some frozen, defrosted raspberries. Not perfect, but quite edible.

Thursday/7-Apr-16: Couldn't manage to shop yesterday, and was looking forward to shopping at Intermarché today while Ed was in choir practice because there was tuna on sale. Not. That was at Leclerc where the tuna was on sale. Got salmon instead. Solo shopping takes a lot longer than the two of together. Intermarché has quite a few things that Leclerc (our regular grocery) doesn't: hoisin sauce, 10% white vinegar (known to us as schoonmaakazijn). Their veggies are pretty good quality, but the selection is limited. Except that they frequently have very nice looking corn on the cob; impulse-bought some of this today. A better selection of Magnums too. But other things are really limited in choice. Definitely worth going to occasionally, but not sure about making it our regular store.

I saw my second hoopoe of the season today, Ed's first, on the way home from shopping.

Seems like Vanessa is keeping two chickens now. They've found a hole in the fence and have come into our yard two evenings. Really cute. I do like chickens. I went over to a neighbor to ask if they were missing any hens. He said no, but Vanessa had two now. Hope they last longer than the kitties. Ed has closed the hole in the fence.

Dinner was a halfish recipe of Thai Salmon Cakes with Basil Lime Mayonnaise (web). Very good. Not hard, but time-consuming. The Basil Lime Mayo (aioli, they call it) with store-bought mayo was finger-lickin' good. Served with basmati rice tossed with a bit of rice vinegar, and some Cucumber Salad (Delightful, p51). For dessert, some store-bought framboisiers, which were definitely passable. (There were only two, so I figured they were ours.)

Put the chicken for Citrus-Marinated Game Hens (Picnic, p14) on to marinate overnight. There were no game hens, not even a coquelet (which I've used before for this recipe) at the store yesterday, so I got the smallest chickie I could find, at 1.1kg.

Yogurt on overnight.

Friday/8-Apr-16: Cooking day. Started Parmesan Meat Loaf (MikeRoy, p64) in the crockpot. Made this ages ago, and we found it a really yummy meat loaf. But the sauce has tomatoes and we've only recently discovered Ed can have deseeded ones.

Then made Ed's "picnic" meal for tomorrow's singing workshop and my daytime meal. Cooked the chickie halves by broiling them, three 10-minute stretches (last one a bit short), skin-side down, skin-side-up, skin-side down. About halfway through the middle stretch, I moved the broiling pan onto the bottom of the broiler rather than the rack.

Then roasted (i.e., broiled) some bell peppers, one for Couscous Salad with Roasted Peppers (Picnic, p16) and one for something else. Then made the couscous salad. Then made Marinated Green Beans with Toasted Almonds (Picnic, p18). Having no walnut oil in house, I used avocado oil for this; not sure it was a good idea. Meanwhile, I also made Chocolate Bread Pudding (TLNewEng, p132).

Dinner was meatloaf with some steamed broccoli and corn on the cob (GMO from Senegal, not seasonal or local, sorry, but delicious). For dessert there was, yes, Chocolate Bread Pudding, served with store-bought marsacpone-cream instead of heavy cream.

This was actually a bit of a strange recipe. First it called for fresh bread, which is exactly what bread puddings don't do. They're generally meant for using up odd bits of bread. The bread is shredded/crumbled very fine and makes a kind of bread mush with the milk. The result was tasty, but the texture wasn't especially nice, and a lot of liquid wept from the not-quite-custard.

Saturday/9-Apr-16: Oops, meant to buy eight plum tomatoes for oven-roasting, but seem to have only seven. They're in the oven roasting.

Ed ate only part of his chicken half today. I ate only the salads and was getting ready to start my chicken half when he got home. We'll save that for another day. I finished his while he gnawed bones, then we had some fruit, then we piggily finished the bread pudding. The chicken was extra yummy. Broiling worked very well. Not sure it would be a good idea with a bigger bird, but was fine with the small one I had.

Fourteen tomato halves with concentrated flavor in the freezer now. They smell delicious.

Sunday/10-Apr-16: Another, less elaborate picnic lunch for Ed's at his singing workshop. We both had Roasted Eggplant and Pepper Sandwich (Picnic, p23). I roasted the bell pepper on Friday with the one for the couscous salad and grilled the eggplant slices yesterday. Assembled the sandwiches thsi morning and added some basil leaves. Good. Accompanied by Cantaloupe Soup (Picnic, p25). It's a bit early for melons but there were some small ones in the shop. One small one made a nice bit of cold soup for each of us.

There were some munchies at the end of the workshop day, after a little concert. Nothing else happened in the kitchen.

This week in the kitchen

Monday/29-Jul-13: Working on our blueberry surplus, I made some Blueberry Scones (MC) this afternoon. Pretty good, they are.

The hot weather may be gone for a while, but there are still cantaloupe to use up. Tonight's dinner was Melon, Zucchini, and Pancetta Salad (PatSalads, p22). Pretty good it was too. I had only mâche and arugula, too much probably; the bitterness of a bit of frisée would probably have been nice. No honeydew melon, just a charentaise melon, which is similar to cantaloupe. Quite a nice salad. For afters, we ate a bit of goat cheese.

Tuesday/30-Jul-13: Pasta night. Made Dilly Pasta (PastaMach, p72) with Shrimp Dill Sauce (PastaMach, p135). The pasta had dried dill in it, but not much added flavor. The sauce was so-so, not one to do again.

Wednesday/31-Jul-13: Shopping today. Not very big in volume, but lots of money involved.

Dinner was Salmon & Avocado Salad (PatSalads, p80). I liked it, but Ed thought there was too much balsamic in the sauce. Which was interesting because there was none. I was thinking the sauce (mirin and soy) went very well with the smoked salmon, while he thought it overpowered it. I thought it would be a nice starter, in smaller portions, for an Asian-ish meal.

Thursday/1-Aug-13: Ed's Montbron choir had a picnic today, so I was up (relatively) early to prepare our food. First there was Cantaloupe Soup (Picnic, p25), which was tasting good up to the point of adding the balsamic vinegar. That changed the color and didn't enhance the flavor. For the main, there was some old favorites, Spicy Grilled Peppered Lamb Skewers (BigFlav, p142) along with the recommended Green Grape-Parsley Relish (BigFlav, p77) and potato salad à la Joy of Cooking, requested by Ed. Yesterday while shopping, I noticed cheesecake in the fresh cheese section and bought us a chunk for dessert. Yum.

Friday/2-Aug-13: Yogurt on overday.

The blueberry harvest is in full swing, so lots to use up. Dinner was Chicken & Blueberry Pasta Salad (web), a surprising combination, chicken breasts, pasta, feta, and blueberries, but it worked well. A simple salad to follow, then cheese, trying to use up what we didn't eat with Jody and Steve. After dinner we picked another pint or so of blueberries. There will be another batch to pick, but may not as much.

Saturday/3-Aug-13: Made up some Vinegary Barbecue Sauce (Everlasting, p193) for tomorrow's dinner. Finger-licking good.

Dinner was Pasta with Summer Vegetables in a Spicy Peanut Sauce (MC 2BTried). Not as spicy as advertised. Not bad altogether. Then some crêmes brulées from the freezer for dessert.

Sunday/4-Aug-13: Tonight we had sort of pulled pork sandwiches, some cooked pork from the freezer that soaked overnight in the Vinegary Barbecue Sauce, got reheated, and served in ciabattas. Now, that's a really good sauce, sweet and sour and spicy. Served with Mama's Garlic Coleslaw (MC, HandyBook) and some Oven Roasted Corn that was supposed to be amazing, but wasn't really.

Yogurt on overnight.

This week in the kitchen

Monday/21-Jun-10: For lunch, I made a broccoli-shrimp stir-fry very loosely based on Seafood Broccoli Stir-Fry from my MC 2BTried cookbook. Good enough, but nothing worth keeping.

Out of bread again. Made some Cornmeal Bread (BigGerman, p35) so we'd have something for breakfast.

Tuesday/22-Jun-10: Pizza for lunch today. Grilled the rest of the asparagus, some zucchini, and some eggplant slices; used some faux pizza sauce from the freezer, some grated (half-frozen) mozzarella, and some slices of goat cheese. Followed by a big salad topped with the leftover green bean/corn salad and sweet potato bits. Dessert was two Bonne Maman semolina custards. All good.

Wednesday/23-Jun-10: Never could find the cilantro pesto recipe I've made before, so I smerged a bunch of recipes I found on the web. Not wonderful, but not bad. Served a bit with fusilli and froze two more small lumps. Salad for the rest of dinner.

The new ice cream maker I ordered has arrived. I've put the bucket in the freezer where it has to freeze for 24 hours before making anything. Now I have to choose a recipe. The recipe book that came with it has some very odd recipes, including one with green asparagus purée.

Thursday/24-Jun-10: Put a pork loin roast in a very slow (275F) oven with some spices. Made some tortillas and shredded the meat. Didn't really work all that well, but we'll have a nice stew or chili or some such from the leftover juice and meat.

Raspberries are coming in fast. Seems like more than last year. I might have to make jam again.

Friday/25-Jun-10: The organic stand at the Montbron market still has chard, which I was planning to buy till I realized that I wouldn't be able to make that tart for several days. I'll try to organize next week to make that on Friday. There was some nice looking salmon also, but the same problem.

Quiz night tonight, so no meal at home. Defrosted a coquelet and started it marinating for tomorrow's choir picnic.

Saturday/26-Jun-10: Busy in the morning making our picnic meal, which was the "Memorial Day at the Pond" menu from Picnic. There was Citrus-Marinated Game Hens (Picnic, p14), using a coquelet instead, grilled in the oven. This was good and quite fast to cook. Last time we had coquelets Ed thought we needed a whole one each. This time, he thought his half was just right. Then there was Couscous Salad with Roasted Peppers (Picnic, p16), which was good even though I neglected to roast the pepper. And Marinated Green Beans with Toasted Almonds (Picnic, p18), which was also good. Had planned to make a small amount of ice cream, but couldn't find the recipe book that goes with the old ice cream maker. The Perfect Scoop and the book for the new ice cream maker largely have recipes that start with a cooked base, which has to be refrigerated a good long while.

Sunday/27-Jun-10: Lunched with Sally and Mike today prior to F1 and the England-Germany World Cup game. Took the leftover couscous salad and green beans from yesterday. Brought enough home that I won't need to cook tomorrow, just make a nice salad to go with.

Raspberries coming like mad right now. Will have to make jam or ice cream or something very soon. The berries are small, not as bit as those you see in the grocery, but tasty. The healthier of the two yellow raspberries that I planted will have some berries before long. Picked another fraise de bois; the three puny plants we've got left are sending out lots of runners. We may have to do something to contain them. Picked a cherry tomato from the one in a pot. There are lots to come, but this is the first. Tasty it was.
