This week in the kitchen

Monday/28-May-12: Home from our travels today. Which was a holiday, so Sally did some shopping for us yesterday. (Forgot to ask her to get some apples and bananas, so we're fruitless for a few days.)

Made an easy dinner, including pasta for two. Brought water to a boil and added chunks of broccoli. Sautéed garlic and red pepper flakes, then tossed in the (drained) broccoli while the pasta cooked. Stirred the drained pasta together with the broccoli, some goat cheese, and some of the pasta water. That was it, and good it was. Followed by a salad.

Tuesday/29-May-12: Barbara brought us more than 2 quarts of strawberries today. Ate a bunch for lunch. Made a half dose of Strawberry-Sour Cream Ice Cream (Scoop, p90).

Dinner was Barley, Broccoli, and Cannellini Bean Soup from the freezer, topped up with the remains of yesterday's broccoli head. Good it was. Then we ate all of the ice cream, which was very good.

Wednesday/30-May-12: Shopped this a.m. Dinner was a half recipes of Pork Chops with Red Pepper Grits (MC), which I've made many times before. My grits were out of date and probably buggy (darn, didn't think to get any while we were in the US), so I used polenta; also didn't use the roasted red pepper strips. Served with some fava beans. Then a salad.

Yogurt on overnight.

Thursday/31-May-12: The yogurt that I bought for a starter has an unappealing texture, a bit lumpy and weeping. Ed will get more today after choir practice. Still, have to use up this batch. So, today's ice cream is Strawberry Frozen Yogurt (Scoop, p91). Still have a pint or so of strawberries left, maybe for a sorbet tomorrow.

Dinner was a half recipe of Madhur Jaffrey's Shrimp Biryani (web), not bad at all. Accompanied by old favorites, Carrot and Onion Salad (MJ1, p171) and Yoghurt with Cucumber and Mint (MJ1, p162) aka raita. We were too full to have any frozen yogurt for dessert, but I licked the spoon after putting it in the freezer and it's pretty good.

Sigh, another month gone by without pasta. Thought I might manage today, but it didn't work.

Friday/1-June-12: Dinner was Baked Eggs with Yogurt and Chilli, a recipe all over the web, from Yotam Ottolenghi's Plenty, which looks like a book that's going to be high on my xmas list. It was easy and good. I've collected a number of similar recipes in the last months, with spinach or arugula/rockets for the base, eggs baked in, and topped with a yogurt sauce. Yum.

For after we had some pavé d'affinois, one of our favorite cheap cheeses, followed by some Strawberry Frozen Yogurt. All yum.

Saturday/2-June-12: Barbara brought us yet another load of strawberries, two liters/quarts, at least. I dug out a recipe I'd saved but never made last year, Strawberry Balsamic Jam with and without Black Pepper (web). Had the right amount of strawberries, but ended up with only about one and a half pints, rather than four; no explanation. The finger-licking bit was quite good. We'll see how it is in the morning.

Dinner was (sort of) Buckwheat Noodles with Green Beans and Toasted Sesame-Lime Vinaigrette (web). Had to made the noodles, since there were none to be found at the shop; no green beans at several shops, so used asparagus instead (I bet these should be kousebanden, yard-long beans, instead of green beans);  turkey left from Thanksgiving, rather than chicken or tofu; not quite enough sesame oil, filled out with peanut oil. Altogether a nice one-dish dinner for a warm night. Finished off with more Strawberry Frozen Yogurt.

Sunday/2-June-12: The Strawberry Balsamic Jam with Black Pepper is quite good. :-)

Lovely dinner with Barbara and David, to watch the queen's 60th jubilee float by (and get rained out) on TV.

This week in the kitchen

Monday/14-May-12: Ed suggested lunch at La Bellone today, a nice thing to do before leaving. Sandwiches and fruit, along with the first radish from the salad garden, for dinner.

Tuesday/15-May-12 — Sunday/27-May-12: I was travelling; Ed was home alone for the first four days. Nothing much happened in the kitchen. Ed had leftovers from the fridge or the freezer for the first days, and even made himself some bread.

This week in the kitchen

Monday/7-May-12: A nice quiz dinner this evening. Nothing happening in the kitchen,

Tuesday/8-May-12: Had an idea to make fresh pasta today, but that didn't work. Dinner was a half dose of Linguine with Lemon, Garlic, and Thyme Mushrooms (web) with DeCecco linguine. Then a salad. Then the rest of the bread pudding, with some strawberries.

Wednesday/9-May-12: Yogurt on overday. Shopping today. There were green asparagus this time, so the new recipes go back on the plan.

Dinner was an oldie-but-goodie, Baked Fish with Kumquats and Ginger (Uncommon, p273) with some very nice salmon fillets. Accompanied by clean-out-the-fridge roasted veggies.

Thursday/10-May-12: Bought apples and plums for apple-plum butter last week, and added three Golden Delicious apples that tasted ok but had a terrible texture. Made up a more-or-less double dose of Apple-Plum Butter, and gave the extra to Vanessa and family.

Dinner was Thai Rice Noodles with Chicken and Asparagus (EAT-L). Wasn't bad, surprisingly unspicy, even though I added more than a full amount of chili-garlic sauce for a half recipe. Ed added a goodly dose of sriracha at the table. Maybe not a keeper.

Friday/11-May-12: Using up some of the frozen, grated zucchini still in the freezer, dinner was Penne with Zucchini Pistou (CL/jul10). The recipe had you slice the zuke, but the grated worked fine. It wasn't bad at all. Some double chocolate mini Magnums for dessert.

Made up some rub for tomorrow's roast chicken. Rubbed it in and have the chickie sitting in the fridge till it's time to cook it.

Saturday/12-May-12: Simple dinner tonight, Mimi's Sticky Chicken (somewhere on the web), rubbed, then slow-roasted. I put the rub under the skin, rather than on it, and the meat turned out too salty. Not sure why it's supposed to be "sticky". Mine wasn't. But it's a pretty good way to do a chicken, long cooking at 250F. Accompanied by some boiled potatoes and haricots verts. All tasty. The rest of the strawberries for dessert.

Sunday/13-May-12: Dinner was Asparagus and Mushroom Risotto (EatingWell). Tasty. But risottos that start off with red wine are not as pretty as those that start off with white wine. To use up the asparagus, there was a bit  more than 2 servings, so we're stuffed. With a salad and some camembert after.
