This week in the kitchen

Monday/25-Apr-11: Lunched at Chez Cisseen today with Bill, meaning to have a small one, but didn't quite make it. For dinner there was Grilled Caesar Salad (MC), an old favorite. Dessert was Belgian waffles with blueberries and vanilla ice cream.

Part of our nice gourmand lunch at our hotel on Saturday was cannoli of smoked salmon. The filling was ricotta (or something similar), livened with grated radishes and celeriac perhaps, or maybe only radishes. This is somewhat similar to a starter I've made with smoked salmon by lining small dishes and filling. The bit of crunch in the cannoli filling was quite nice. I should try that next time I try my recipe.

Another cutesy feature from the hotel restaurnt: desserts all had little caramel "flags" inserted. It looked like they poured small puddles of hot caramel and laid a kind of flat bamboo toothpick into each. Decorative and tasty.

Tuesday/26-Apr-11: Lunch today at the restaurant in St Sornin following a visit to the winery there. Took Bill to La Roche train, did errands, shopped. Dinner was fruit and a couple of chocolatey dessert things I bought.

Wednesday/27-Apr-11: Dinner was more or less Grilled Salmon Steaks with Carom (IndLight, p154), grilled under the broiler and very tasty. Accompanied by a half recipe of Tangy Green Beans with Ajwain and Ginger (SpiceKitch, p38) made with frozen green beans. Also Plain Basmati Rice (SpiceKitch, p68), very simple and plain, just pop some cardamom pods in with the cooking rice. For dessert there was the last of the little pastry cups, with some vanilla ice cream and some mango slices. All good.

Thursday/28-Apr-11: Warmed up the leftover pizza for dinner, maybe a trifle old, but it looked, smelled, and tasted OK. Then a big salad.

Friday/29-Apr-11: Very nice dinner at La Bellone with Bill.

Saturday/30-Apr-11: Dinner at Camping d'Etang with Bill.

Sunday/1-May-11: Out all day for the ralleye touristique; brought along a picnic lunch. Warm Broccoli and Potato Salad (MDSalads, p15), accompanied by lots of goodies from the charcuterie in Montbron. Tasty, if late, dinner of omelettes with sorrel.

This week in the kitchen

Monday/18-Apr-11: A mix of a dinner. Cilantro Zucchini Hummus (MC) with some mini-naans, storebought. And a half recipe of Asparagus with Balsamic Tomatoes (CLmag, apr11, soon to be MC), using the last of my oven-dried tomatoes. (I'll definitely do more of these this year.) And a big salad. And two more of the frozen grand marnier desserts from Toupargel.

Tuesday/19-Apr-11: Midday meal today. (Lots of incentive for this now because I go off for my line dancing class at 18.00 and don't feel like cooking or eating afterwards.) Made fresh pasta (using the lasagna ricci cutters, tagliatelle width with zigzag edges). Oops, forgot to use the Tipo 00 flour until too late. Served the pasta with the porcini sauce from the freezer, originally made at the beginning of October. Too bad that I have neglected to record exactly how I made this sauce, and gave no clue to where the idea came from. Well, it was good nevertheless, just not repeatable. Served with a salad of mâche and rocket, with some chocolate chocolate chip cookies for dessert.

Have gathered a huge stack of Vie Pratique Gourmands from around the house (they seem to get half-read and then set aside somewhere), and will try to get through them in the next week or so. Once thing I noticed today: there was another article discussing how to sleep better. One thing that's always mentioned in these articles is to avoid stimulating foods after 17.00. So, no caffeine. And no vitamin C. Vitamin C is stimulating and keeps you awake? A new idea for me.

Wednesday/20-Apr-11: Yogurt on overday. Shopping today, small one since we're trying to clear the fridge before going away for the weekend. Needed to buy some small garbage sacks, and all they had were scented. Vanilla smelling garbage? There's already too many smelly things in the world.

Dinner was a clear-the-fridge pizza. I broiled slices of eggplant, the rest of the asparagus, and slices of onion. Mixed a pyramid goat cheese with chopped garlic to use for the base. Topped this with the veggies and some shredded basil leaves. Then topped it all off with a ball of mozzarella, shredded. Turned out pretty good. Dessert was strawberries and ice cream.

Thursday/21-Apr-11: Still cleaning out the fridge. We started with steamed haricots verts with a vinaigrette made with white balsamic vinegar and a finely chopped shallot. Very nice. Then we had "sloppy joes" with the rest of the chipotle pulled chicken. Made some more cabbage slaw to go with this. For afters we finished off the Livarot.

Friday/22-Apr-11: Away from home. Nothing happening in the kitchen.

Saturday/23-Apr-11: Away from home. Nothing happening in the kitchen.

Sunday/24-Apr-11: Home again. Neither of us feeling very well. For dinner I made a salad of the last bit of lettuce with had and all the goodies I could find hiding in the fridge.

This week in the kitchen

Monday/11-Apr-11: Whew, really low on energy this afternoon and evening. Had a quick dinner on the plan so I could go to the gardening club, but didn't have the oomph to go. But we did have Spaghetti with Shrimp and Scallops (30MinPasta, p109), only without the scallops since there were just the number of shrimp in the freezer needing to be used. Then a salad. Then the end of the pont l'eveque. Then some chocolate pound cake.

Yogurt on overnight.

Tuesday/12-Apr-11: Today, we had our main meal at midday more or less. Made individual portions from a half recipe of a Broccoli and Bacon Quiche (MC 2BTried). Not crust, so not really a quiche. Good enough, but could have used some sautéed onions in there. Followed by a big salad, leaving us lettuce-less. Topped off with some chocolate pound cake.

After line dance we had some cheddar cheese and onion sandwiches with our fruit.

Wednesday/13-Apr-11: Shopping this morning; the fridge is full again. Stuffed some artichokes as part of dinner. The stuffing wasn't as good as it has been before. Anchovy taste was too strong, but something else too, not sure what. Bought what turned out to be a pair of huge salmon fillets and made Broiled Salmon Steaks (FastShulman, p239), with the fillets instead of steaks (briefly marinated in lime juice, soy sauce, oil, ginger, and garlic). These were not bad, although I didn't get them quite cooked enough on the first pass. Served with some pasta and Shredded Zucchini (MW@Home, p87), which is always good. More chocolate pound cake for dessert; over the halfway mark now.

The jar of plum jar being almost empty, I made up some Apple-Plum Butter (MC).

Thursday/14-Apr-11: Crockpotted a chicken today, for tomorrow night's dinner as it turned out. We pulled the meat from the bones after dinner, before the cheese.

Dinner turned out to be (a half dose of) Spaghetti with Olives, Capers, and Anchovies (30MinPasta, p121), which was quite good for minimal work. Then a big salad. We picked the chicken before we ate half of a Petit Livarot.

Friday/15-Apr-11: Cornmeal Bread (BigGerman, p35) [BasicRapid/Med/Med] on in the morning to go with dinner.

Ah yes, the best laid plans ... We ended up going to dinner at the fish-n-chips van in Montbron with friends. Ate outside and finished the last round of drinks inside when it got dark and cold. The chicken will keep another day, I'm sure, although the bread may suffer a bit.

Saturday/16-Apr-11: Got to eat the Chipotle Pulled Chicken (web, soon to be MC) finally. Served over slices of yesterday's Cornmeal Bread. The cabbage slaw go-with was also good.

Sunday/17-Apr-11: Lunch at Lesley and Toby's today to see photos of their India trip. Nothing further happening in our kitchen.

This week in the kitchen

Monday/4-Apr-11: We went to a quiz dinner tonight, so nothing much on in the kitchen. Yogurt on overnight.

Tuesday/5-Apr-11: Seemed to be in the kitchen all day today, although I wasn't really. Lunch was Leek and Onion Potato Tart (MC), which took a lot longer to make than I remembered. The base of this tart is potatoes mashed with an egg and some ricotta, a nice variation. While it was in the oven I found a ripe tomato and made a couple of insalatas caprese with a ball of mozzarella that was wanting to be used up and some basil leaves. Unfortunately the tomato, although quite pretty and ripe, was tasteless. Then a mâche-roquette salad.

After lunch I made a loaf of Pumpkin Cranberry Bread (MC) with the cranberries that have been hiding in the crisper for quite a while. We'll probably manage to eat this all in two sittings. Good stuff.

Wednesday/6-Apr-11: Oh my, the weather has turned to summer, almost 30C outside! Off for shopping in the early afternoon after a long morning dogwalk with neighbors. After the walk we had tea and pumpkin cranberry bread in the shade outside.

Shopping, I bought some halibut and made a Thai-ish dinner with yellow curry paste, the end of the coconut milk, some broccoli, and some onion. Served over rice. Not bad at all. Accompanied by a half dose of Asian Cucumber Condiment (MWLowFat, p367), an old favorite, really tasty with minimum effort. For dessert there was vanilla ice cream with mango slices and the last bits of the pumpkin cranberry breads, which all went together quite well.

Thursday/7-Apr-11: For our midday meal, we had the leftover Leek and Onion Potato Tart reheated. Served with it Broccoli Slaw with it, loosely following Smitten Kitchen's recipe. Ended with a bit of Pont d'Eveque.

Friday/8-Apr-11: No cooking today. Dinner with the choir at La Bellone after the service.

Saturday/9-Apr-11: Before the loto evening, I made an Asparagus Strudel (from a recipe collected who knows where, before I started recording where I collected them). It was an interesting idea, but a poorly written recipe and wasn't entirely successful. It did come with a nice sauce, the same thing, very simple, I've made several times, yogurt with chopped fresh mint, salt, and freshly ground pepper. Served with a salad.

Sunday/10-Apr-11: After our walk I made Chocolate Poundcake (an old magazine clipping). Yesterday I got some turkey scallops out of the freezer for tonight's dinner. Oops, there were two chicken thighs instead. Deboned them and made up dinner a pasta dinner with some broccoli and mushrooms. Not bad.
